Are they all arrested?

No. Kat doesn't have insurance... but there are more problems

Chapter 144 by robyna

They got to the gym about eleven, after a couple of hours of angry questions from the detectives who simply didn't want to believe that Kat's lack of insurance wasn't enough to eliminate any motive for committing arson.

The gym was a mess, sealed off with crime scene tape, all of the boxing equipment dripping with water and foam from the firefighters, and half the ceiling pulled down.

"No way can we just clean it up and re-open," Usha said. "We're finished. All our money down the tubes. This sucks worse than I can say."

Kat didn't say anything. In two days she'd gone from the top of the world, living her dream, having a boyfriend, winning big in championship poker to having nothing.

"I'd let the two of you move in with me," Usha said, "but my ex would go nuts. He's got this conservative Indian sexual thing going and he would be all over me with lawyers to get custody of my daughter. I can't risk it."

"No problem," Rick said.

His phone beeped and he remembered the text he'd blown off the previous night.

He called it up, surprised to see that Olivia was trying to contact him in the middle of the night.

"Got to meet u," the text said. "Call me asap."

Well, this was as soon as possible. He dialed her number.

The phone rang for a while, then rolled over but not to voice mail. "Who is this please?"

The voice was male.

"I'm calling for Olivia Hughes."

"She can't come to the phone right now. May I ask who's calling?"

Rick hung up. There was something seriously wrong and Olivia wasn't likely to just hand her phone off to some nosy busy-body.

Twenty seconds later, his phone rang.

"This is the McKinney police. You attempted to call Mrs. Olivia Hughes. Can I ask the nature of your call."

The same officious voice. Rick's heart sank into his boots. If the McKinney police had Olivia's phone, she was in trouble.

"This is her physical trainer. She had asked for a nine o'clock appointment this morning but she didn't show. I'm calling to see if I can re-set the appointment for a convenient time."

There was a long pause. Then, "Don't go anywhere, Mr. Peters. We're sending a uniform to pick you up."

Well, shit. Should he run or wait for the cops? Rather than do anything rash, he decided it was time to call Eliza again.

He clicked open his contacts when his phone rang again. Talk about mister popularity.

"This is Rick."

"Rick, it's Dan Peters."

"Oh, hi Dan. I was just trying to call Olivia. She--"

"She's dead." Dan's voice broke. "Someone broke into our house last night and killed her."

"I'm so sorry, Dan. I know you must be devastated."

"I am, Rick. I won't be able to give my work the attention it deserves over the next couple of months so I wanted to ask if you'd be willing to come back as acting Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the next few months. There will, of course, be a nice pay bump and a substantial bonus if you stay at least three months. I know this seems sudden and frankly, it's almost an insult after we laid you off, but bio-DNA needs you. I told you I fought for you before but I didn't fight hard enough. After Olivia's..." Dan broke into sobs.
