Chapter 3 by dingsdongs dingsdongs

Was her attempt to escape successful?

No, it was not

After she had successfully disposed of these two minions for the time being, the lifeguard tore at the chains, which bound her to the center of the pentagram, with all the strength that she was able to muster. However the result of her struggle wasn't what she had hoped for.
Yes, she was still capable of feeling something, namely sharp pain, as the constricting cuffs dug deep into her wrists, and the pressure applied by herself rubbed her skin sore. Severing chains of steel however was certainly not something that she was capable of.

Accompanied by the amused and evil laugh of the high priest, and as the numbness continued to spread into every part of her body, she had to concede that her struggle was futile. If anything her physical exertion seemed to have accelerated the spread of the narcotic vapor within her body. Soon she could no longer feel anything, as even the pain on her wrists faded away. Her legs became shaky, and she wasn't sure how much longer she could even remain standing upright.

"It's time."

At this command, the two hooded figures, that she had previously overpowered, rose up again, just as if nothing had happened. They stepped close to the weakened and trembling woman in their midst, who dreaded and feared what those acolytes were about to do to her.
They took hold of her upper arms again, though at least for now only to support her and to make sure to ease her down on her knees, before the loss of control would have caused her fragile body to collapse to the ground on her own.

"Breathe, my sweet. Breeeeathe…" The high priest hissed once more, and the female cult member, who held the bowl, stepped closer again. Even though Caroline's whole body was numb already, she was **** to keep inhaling the cloying vapor. Tears filled her eyes, and her vision became clouded and blurry. Not much later, she could no longer feel the hands holding her, and even the female acolyte before her faded, as the shape of her black robe blended with the darkness.

Darkness. Is that was all there was?
