Chapter 19 by little.cindy little.cindy

Did I go to lunch with my boss?

No, you already had plans.

"Um, no, that's, uh, that's alright." I swallowed, stepping quickly through the door that betrayed me so thoroughly. "I promised Brad we'd do lunch. Maybe next time?" I sped away, the door closing behind me, and quickly came to Brad's cube.

"Lunch?" I said, an awkward tone in my voice, my face still burning from my recent discovery.

"Sure! Just a sec." He typed away at his computer and I caught my breath. Glancing down, everything seemed to be in order, but I adjusted it conservatively just in case. "There we go! Shall we?" He stood and we wandered off to the break room. He pulled a lunch bag out of the fridge and offered the door to me, presumably to grab mine.

"Oh, no, I don't actually..." I suddenly felt awkward again, but in a much more reasonable way than moments ago.

"I guess I'm buying!" He grinned as we stepped over to the small table against the wall. "Half a PB&J?" He held the soggy-looking bread out. I accepted, gracefully, and we munched with gently interrupted small talk.

Eventually he mentioned the report. "Was Joe not okay?" Obviously I was flustered coming back from handing it in.

"No, I mean, it was just one of those things where everything, like, explodes in your face?" I held up my hand, a circle of finger tips to thumb, and made a jerking motion with my wrist before mocking a splattering into my face. "You know?"

Brad blinked at me, looking dumbfounded. "Wait, what?"

I made the motion again, jerking the wrist a bit more this time for emphasis. "You know, when things explode in your face?"

"So... it went poorly?"

"Yes, it went poorly!" I did it again. "What do you not understand?"

"I have literally never seen that hand gesture before." His bewilderment turned into an amused grin. "At first I thought you gave Joe a hand job."

I choked on my sandwich, laughing. "That would've went better!" We chuckled. "You've never seen that gesture? Really?"

"I mean, I've seen, like..." He jerked his wrist, and tossed the 'explosion' away.

"Oh, well, ya, guys would see it like that, wouldn't you?" I glared at him, grinning.

"I suppose that makes a lot more sense now..." We chuckled again.

Did I realize just how late it was getting?
