Nikolaj's Journal: Part One; Entry one, two, and three

{if N = 1}Nora sat down, opened the journal she found earlier, and began to read;

'Thursday 12th 1978,

We continued our expedition down the tunnel. Dr. Smirnoff became sick and so stayed behind at the shrine, but it was not so serious that we had to leave anyone else behind with him, despite the insistance of his daughter. We spent most of the day rappelling down a sudden rock shaft. While we were descending some misfortune struck us, when one of the ropes holding one of our supply bags snapped, sending some of our valuable equipment, like our cameras, crashing down. Most of it was unsalvageable, but we took what we could. What bothers me is that I inspected the ropes before we set out meticulously, and I was certain they were fine. Professor ------ was in charge of that bag. I will keep my eye on him.'

'Friday 13th 1978,

Another disaster today, and a much more serious one. As we were continuing our expedition there was a sudden great quake. Thankfully the tunnel did not collapse and kill us outright, but that was the end of our luck. The quake must've loosened some kind of underground reservoir, as moments later a torrent of water swept us all away. I was knocked out nearly instantly.

When I woke it was with Angelika over my body trying to resuscitate me. At that moment my heart was racing, and if I may write an unprofessional note, I did not know whether that was from fear or from having her so close to me. We looked for the others, but we could not find Professor ------, or two of the workers. The third worker we did; his chest was cracked open from some of the sharp rocks, and his jaw was cleaved clean in half. The poor bastard was still alive after all this, so we decided to put him out of his misery. The resignation I saw in his eyes haunt me still as I write this. Having no tools for a proper burial we covered the body with rocks in one of the corners of this chamber. We placed pebbles in the shape of a cross on top.

The chamber itself is worth mentioning. It's cavernous and quite tranquil, though somehow unsettling, as if we wandered near the border of someplace we shouldn't be. The only exits we saw out of this place were four tunnels labeled with strange 'glyphs'. Despite the setbacks we will continue with the expedition. Tomorrow, whenever that is since we now have no way of keeping time, we'll head down the tunnel marked with the Crown.'

It is strange that the author did not mention the most glaring feature of the chamber described; the massive door that haunted Nora when she first woke up. Nora shut the journal and rubbed her eyes.
