After your introductions, Nate resumes cleaning up the room and making it a proper space for two people. Meanwhile, he suggests that you set up your school account on the dorm computer.
You are automatically assigned a school email: Peter[email protected]. Once you sign in, you read your welcome emails, including one from Dr. Theodore: the man who ‘needed six ounces’.
Peter,
I’m pleased to welcome you to St. Hartley’s Academy.
I understand that your mother applied on your behalf. Normally, we do not accept transfer students this late into their academic journey–not to mention, from a public school.
Furthermore, your school records show average grades and decent attendance. As America’s premier private educational institution, we strive for nothing less than excellence.
Now then, you must be wondering: Why did the academy accept your application, considering the less than stellar quality of your academic merits?
It seems your mother believes that St. Hartley’s Academy is an institution for juvenile delinquents. Nevermind the fact that you’re 18 years old, and can unenroll yourself at any moment. But here’s my point:
I believe that you have something to prove, don’t you? Many of our students come from unimaginable wealth and privilege. To them, a St. Hartley’s education is expected.
But you, Peter, will be a welcome influence. Your mere presence is enough. The fact that you were admitted under such misunderstanding, spells out the garden path of serendipity. So walk it.
Dr. Theodore, Headmaster of St. Hartley’s Academy
