Chapter 7

Who do you try to talk to?
My crush.
Even though the team was like a good-working machine, I went after Velma. She really looked upset and I just wanted to make it better. So I tapped her shoulder, and she gave me 'leave me alone'. "Look," I said, "at least look at me when I talk to you." And she did, with tears down her cheeks and a kind of scrunched-up face. I didn't know it at the time, but I had some kind of power, and that's the understatement of the millennium.
"What do you want?" she asked bitterly. I told her that I saw the whole argument she had with her friends. "My friends? Those people are not my friends!" She turned around to storm off, and I said to her, frustrated,
"I wish you would tell me what's bothering you." She turned back around, and as she came back, I thought that was convenient. She almost got in my face, and she kind of blew at me about Fred always taking credit for her plans, how Daphne took her glasses just for mentioning getting kidnapped again, and she just broke down right there. She just sobbed and had herself pressed up to me, and in my shock and confusion, I just slowly wrapped my arms around her. ... What? I couldn't leave a girl alone, crying like that. I just hugged her and said it was going to be alright. I patted her back, not sure why I brought this up, but I confessed that she was my favorite in the group: her brains and how well she filled her sweater. Frankly, I mentioned that last quietly so she wouldn't hear me. No such luck... She looked at me with surprised, teary eyes. I gazed back, and it looked like she was **** and in the heat of the moment, I blurted, "I've wanted to meet you, and the gang, for so long. I wish I could kiss you." But that's when I heard what I said: 'Kiss her? Dude, what's wrong with you?' But I didn't get any further because she actually kissed me! She pressed her soft, kind of pouty lips to mine kinda hard, not that I minded... And then she pulled away softly, blushing a bit and she pulled away from me.
"I... I'm so sorry. I-gotta go!" She started walking off quickly, and I told her to 'wait.'
"Can we start over? Maybe get a cup of coffee or something? Name's Dominick with a 'K'." Velma looked at me, and then away; she really seemed unsure of what to think, trying to think it though. "I hope you feel better, if you don't." Maybe something I said got her anxious because she nodded at me, and then disappeared back home probably. Anyway, after that, I decided to go back home myself. Making a simple dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, I thought how awful it must be for the others, breaking up the team... And then my mind trailed to poor Velma. I always thought she put a lot of effort to the team in catching the bad guys, and that's when my cell went off: it was a text message, but I didn't know the number.
