Chapter 7 by crf07 crf07

What is the surprise?

Mother has a secret

As Aretos came up to the house, he saw his mother standing in the doorway waiting for him. The wind blew her simple toga closer to her body. Since being a teenager he had noticed his mother’s amazing figure, and had been turned on more than a few times. The toga now clung more tightly to her large breasts and pressed closely to her slim stomach.

As he entered the house, she gave Aretos a quick kiss on your cheek, before leading you to the table where she had prepared a simple dinner, the last home-cooked one he’d have for the next two years. Sitting at the table, Aretos suddenly realized how famished he was. He quickly dug into the delicious meal. He hardly noticed his mother ate nothing and was silently watching him with a strange look in her eyes.

When he finally pushed his empty plate away, she opened her mouth to speak.

“Did you enjoy your dinner?” she inquired.

“Yeah, I’m going to miss meals like this,” he replied.

She frowns at this comment. “It’s going to be so hard without here,” she said, “especially since Argos, your father, died so recently. The place will be so empty.”

The mention of his father reminded Aretos of the pain of the last few months. He had always helped his father work in the fields and so had been able to take over easily. But his mother hadn’t ever done strenuous field work.

“Don’t worry, I asked the neighbors to come by and help you with keeping the farm up. And because you’re the priestess of Hera, people will always be here, asking for your advice. You won’t be alone, mother. And I’ll be home sooner than you think.”

As he said these things, tears began to fall from her gentle eyes. “ How did you become such a good young man?” she asked.

A little smile crossed his face. “Father taught me more than how to work hard.”

She smiled. They sat in silence for several moments. Finally, Aretos’ mother sighed heavily and looked straight into Aretos’ eyes. “Aretos,” she said, “I have a confession to make to you. Your father and I were going to tell you after you had returned from training, but I just can’t keep it to myself anymore. Aretos, I am not your mother. And my husband was not your father.”

The look in her eyes told him that she was not lying. Thoughts flood is head. How could this be? For as long as he could remember he this woman had been his mother.

After a few moments of stunned silence, Aretos opens his mouth. “What do you mean?” was all that he could manage before falling silent again.

She continued her story. “Sixteen years ago, Argos and I were moving back here from Thebes, where he was a merchant for several years. As we were traveling through the hills between Corinth and Mycenae, we met a beautiful young woman on the road. She carried her child with her. She seemed agitated and fearful. But after taking one look at me, though, a great relief came over her. She approached me and said ‘Please, Melitta, you are a priestess of Hera, take my child, he will be safe with you.’ I asked how she knew my name, but she just insisted that I take the child, which I did. Moments later she was gone. Argos and I, unable to have children ourselves, gladly took you in as our own. I’m sorry we didn’t tell you sooner but we wanted you to have a pleasant childhood.”

When she finishes, she is nearly in a full sob. Aretos can only sit there in silence. Was everything in his life a lie? Who was this woman? Who were his parents? Why did she give him up to total strangers? And how could his mother, no, this woman he called mother keep this from him for so long? He sat with these thoughts stewing in his brain for a few moments. Then suddenly he stood up and stormed out of the house into the twilight of the setting sun.

Melitta followed him to the door, shouting after him. “Where are you going, Aretos?”

So, Where are you going, Aretos? to a lover? to find your parents? or back to mother?
