What's next?
More talking and an idea.
"Please don't feel like you have to sex it up for me," Chris said guiltily. "I want to keep you you for as long as possible."
"Of course," Ada said in her normal register, straightening up. "That's so sweet..."
"I'm really not that bad of a guy," he said.
"Soon I won't be capable of disagreeing," she said wryly. "Let me think you're a shithead while I still can."
Chris chuckled. "I can see you starting to like me more. For starters, you seem to be genuinely enjoying this conversation."
She smiled warmly. "Good point. I really don't know why I didn't like you.."
"That's not true," Chris said with his eyes downcast.
"Ok, the constant ogling and swooning and wooing wasn't my favorite..."
"I mean, to be fair, I stopped asking after you said no," he mumbled.
"That's fair," she agrees. "You did. Wait, what am I saying? You hounded me with that shit for years! Christ, it feels unpleasant disagreeing with you."
"Probably because the last vestiges of who you were are dissonant with who you are."
Ada started flipping through the paperwork. "That reminds me, I saw something interesting in here. Ah, here it is:
the subject's behavior will be unchanged at first, likely from a combination of instinct and assumptions about what the doctor wants or needs. If they find out that their assumptions are invalid, they collapse and remain immobile until they obtain actionable data about the doctor.
"So what?" Chris asked. "I already told you I want you to act normal."
"But what if you could undo it? Just for a little bit?"
"Why would you want that?"
She shrugged and signaled for the check. "If my brain is gonna get cooked, I wanna add a few spices."
"Wait, how did you just call the waiter? I thought you could only do things for me now."
"You wanna go somewhere a little more private?" she asked with a knowing smiling.
Chris nodded, slightly nervous. "Uh, yeah. Yes."
"I know," she said, handing the server her debit card. "That's why I called the waiter."
On the way home they discussed her request further.
"How are we supposed to un-fix this? Should I just order you to go limp?"
"I want the real experience," she said. "Legitimately having no motivation. It sounds really weird. Like, will my body be heavy? Will I be paralyzed?"
"But to get to that state, you have to not know what I want. We can't unring that bell."
She smiled again. Chris had seen her smile more in the last thirty minutes than the last five years.
"I think we can. I think you can order me to forget. And order me not to infer anything about how to please you, but wait for an actual command."
He gave her a strange look. "You've been giving this a lot of thought."
"Wouldn't you?" Ada replied. "I've noticed a few concerning things as I'm going over those papers, though."
"Concerning? About you?"
"Not exactly. They said they've never actually used this on a person, right? But look at the language in all of the example dialogue. It's all attributed to doctor and subject."
Chris pulled into his driveway and cut the engine. "Great literary analysis. Now let's go turn you into an empty shell."
