Miss: An embarrassing departure.

As you, Olivia, and Margarita descend the back stairs, you run into Tom Box going up.

"Why, if it isn't Miss Gloria," he says, breaking into a grin. "And two of your lovely young ladies from Brenda's, heh-heh, nurse training program. Y'all over here to give the gals a refresher on Baby Dyke 101?" He laughs. "At least Brenda sold me on it not being all bad."

You can't frame anything to say to that. So, braving chuckles, jeers, and leers, you put on your Power Bitch Face and hold space for Olivia and Margarita to make sure that Tom Box doesn't try to cop a feel.

"So should we just go?" Margarita asks when you're all dressed.

"Yesss," you say in an angry hiss.

"Guess we better go then," Olivia says. "You'll check in with Brenda? I mean, we got bounced from Occupational Therapy and we don't want to fail out."

You take a deep breath. "You're right," you say. "We should go now, but I'll see Brenda tomorrow and figure out where we should place you." Your breathing evens out. By the time you and the nurse trainees are leaving, you can be coolly polite to Tom Box, and warmer to Brenda, Betty, Margaret and Frieda.

On the front porch, Frieda asks you for your mobile number, and you give it to her. "Thank you, Gloria," she says. "In case Margaret and I have any more questions, or in case any of your other students might have something to add."

You drive Olivia and Margarita back to town. They're hungry, having missed out on an actual lunch, so, seeing the sign on the highway, you stop at the café where Mary Forbes works.

You sit up at the counter. Margarita gets a bowl of chili, Olivia orders a chef's salad, and you get a slice of cherry pie and a coffee.
