Do we follow Kyle as he heads to Melissa’s or do we follow Sam working on MARCI?
Melissa, Darla and Robin discuss "Kylie" before she arrives (Originally by Lord of The Pies)
Meanwhile, back at the mansion down the hill, three girls sat waiting in the shade by the pool. They'd already changed into their bikinis and were killing time as they waited for their new friend to return. It would be rude to start early and end up different shades.
"Hey girls," Darla started, "You think-" She cut herself off, chewing at her lip in indecision.
Melissa turned as she finished fiddling with the angle of the umbrella. Robin ignored them and continued scrolling on her phone, sipping iced boba tea through a straw.
"Do we think what?"
Darla shifted uncomfortably. "I dunno. It's- Kylie. Do you get the feeling there's something... odd about her?"
Robin glanced up from her notifications. "How do you mean?"
"I can't really explain it. Something about how she walks, how she talks, how she carries herself. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's like, weird."
Robin slid her phone into her pocket as she made a small noise of consideration. "Y'know, I didn't want to say anything at the time, but did she seem, like, really shy and awkward around Rob to you? Like she didn't know how to deal with a guy hitting on her?"
Melissa bobbed her head. "And no lingerie either. Seriously, I know she's only here on vacation, but who doesn't pack at least one or two pieces of lace in case of an emergency?"
"It could be she's not used to all the attention we're giving her." Darla suggested. She'd always been the most observant of their friendship quintet (trio, now, since the Gladstone girls were gone). "Maybe she's a wallflower back home?"
"With a build like hers?" Robin scoffed. "Girl's a bit tall and in **** need of a Wonderbra, but she works well with what she's got."
"We don't know her past. Maybe she's a real late bloomer and only starting coming into her curves in the last few months. We have been pushing her kinda hard to fill the gap Amy left."
The conversation died as they all processed this new information. For a long minute, there was no sound save for the bubbling of the pool filter. After a time, an odd expression crossed Melissa's face.
"You don't think she could be-" she glanced around quickly for any eavesdroppers before whispering, "A lesbian do you?"
"What?" Robin asked, "No. No way. A girl like her? Probably has the boys crawling all over her back home."
"No, wait, it makes sense," Darla said. "She didn't really engage in any girl talk. I tried to coax her into the conversation with celebrities, hair, even past boyfriends and got nowhere with her."
Robin crossed her arms defensively. "She's probably just shy. We only did just meet yesterday."
"She did seem pretty awkward and uneasy when we were trying on clothes," Melissa added.
Robin shrugged. "Body image issues." Though her voice lacked its prior conviction.
Darla's eyes widened in realization as a little detail from earlier clicked. "You don't have to worry about the pill if you're not planning on hooking up with any boys."
That cinched it. Robin dropped her empty cup (plastic, thankfully) as she gasped. "Ohmigod..." She spun around. "Mel we can not let your mom find out!"
"You think I don't know that?" Melissa hissed. She glanced back at the back doors as though the woman in question would materialize at the mere mention. "I don't want Kylie to get sent away to that camp to get 'fixed'. Mr. Gladstone's a pushover when his wife's not around."
"She didn't seem all that butch..." Robin pondered, slightly off in her own thoughts. She'd never met a lesbian before and was slightly curious about the concept.
Darla sighed. "Robin, you ignorant slut, there's different kinds of lesbians. Remember how she was dressed when we met? She's probably one of those sporty ones." She groaned and smacked her forehead. "And we just spent all day shoving her into a valley-girl mold. No wonder she seemed so uncomfortable!"
"But... she's hot." Robin insisted, still not quite getting it. "If she likes girls, why didn't she try to flaunt anything around us?"
"You can be a lesbian and still have body issues," Darla countered. "She could be --what's the word?-- self-hating? Maybe her mom is really old-fashioned like mine and she's been hiding her true self all this time. Maybe she's, like, had it so thoroughly beaten into her head that being gay is wrong that she can't even find _herself _attractive."
"That's terrible!"
"Okay then; new plan!" Melissa announced before the mood could sour any further. "First: keep Kylie's sexuality a secret from my Mom. No way that meeting ends well. Second: find a way to teach her that she can still be pretty and fem even if she likes mannish things." She paused. "Somehow. We'll figure it out later. And thirdly: we find her a girlfriend. Just cause Rob was in entirely the wrong ballpark doesn't mean she doesn't deserve our help in having a summer she'll never forget. We probably owe it to her after today."
"Totes," Robin said. "Plus, if she's picking up all the girls at a party, that just leaves more hot guys for us, right?"
The trio broke down into giggles at that and resumed quietly planning a new strategy to tackle their latest project.
Do they confide their suspicions in "Kylie" when she arrives or do they keep their realization to themselves?
