Martin’s Ally

Catherine felt that confidant was probably the easier relationship to foster. She managed to get Martin alone near one of the water coolers. They began making small talk and Catherine saw an opportunity open itself up.

“I wish I could figure out how to get my taxes filed,” Martin said. “Seems like every year I’m paying more and more to tax guys to keep the government from stealing my money. It feels like I’m going to be paying the tax company more than the government this year.”

“I could help you out,” Catherine offered, “I used to work at a tax company.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, what are friends for?”

“I’ll make sure to keep this between you and me,” Martin said, “Don’t want people thinking you are trying to get preferential treatment.”

“Hadn’t crossed my mind,” Catherine said, maybe if this didn’t work out she’d get a promotion.
