When you woke up, you felt much better, and had a bit of clarity. You didn't know how things were going to settle with Dave, but you knew you didn't want to be a hypocrite. You look over to Greg, who is still sleeping, before getting up. You put on a bathrobe and pick up your cell phone, moving to the bathroom so you don't wake up Greg.
You take a deep breath, then sigh, before dialing Diane's number.
The phone rings twice before your sister picks up.
"Hello?" Diane picks up, sounding a little tense.
"Hey, Di. I..want to apologize."
That seems to take her offguard. "For what, Suzy?"
"For being a hypocrite for years. I've realized some things, things I'm going to have to work on. Specifically in regard to my relationship with Dave, but I wanted to set things right with you first."
"Suzy..I..what are you saying?"
"I don't know what's going to happen with me and Dave, but I can't rightfully blame him or you. I love him..and I love you, Di. I don't want this to turn into a rift between us."
You're not positive, but you swear you hear Diane give a small sniffling sound.
"I'm sorry, Suzy. I didn't want to hurt you. I like Dave, I always have, but I swear it was never about stealing him away from you. I just thought..I mean we've always treated sex casually, right? I was so mad that Dave was somehow excluded from all that just because he was your husband," Diane confesses.
You sigh, realizing you had helped create bitter feelings in your little sister due to your selfishness.
"I'm sorry, Di. You're right. We were partners in crime, but I put you under different rules, and that wasn't fair." You took a moment to process what Diane said about Dave. "You mean that, Diane?"
"Yes. When I was angry with you I thought about it, but I never tried to. I like Dave, but he's _your _husband, and your my sister. You piss me off, but I still love you, damn it," now you can hear Diane crying a bit.
You find yourself crying a little too. "When I get back from this trip, we're all going to talk about this, but I couldn't leave without clearing the air with you, Di."
"Thank you, that means a lot to me, Suzy." She pauses before continuing. "Please don't be too mad at Dave. He loves you. He's just a lot like us."
You'd be lying if you said you were completely over the deception, but Diane wasn't lying when she said that.
"I'll keep that in mind, Di." You think for a moment. "Could you do me one favor, please?"
"What is it, Suzy?" Diane asks.
"Could you..please hold off on having sex with Dave again until I have a chance to talk to him when I come back home?"
Diane was quiet a long time. "Does that mean..?"
"I don't know, but please give me that time," you ask fervently. "Swear on Grandma Aggie?" Agnese was your maternal grandmother. You couldn't say "Agnese" growing up, so she became "Grandma Aggie," a tradition that carried on with Diane. You both loved her dearly, and saying "I swear on Grandma Aggie" had been the strongest form of promise between the two of you since.
"..Okay, Suzy, I swear on Grandma Aggie." Diane's answer is heartfelt, but then she chuckles. "You better not be too long, that's good dick you're asking me to hold off on."
Despite everything, the seriousness, the absurdity of the situation, you laugh. If nothing else, it feels like you have your sister back.
"I'll keep that in mind, Di." You smile. "I love you."
"Love you, too, Sis," Diane replies.
You hang up the phone, feeling part of the weight coming off your shoulders.
