Lydia hides in the basement

As the school bell rang, a naked Lydia Deetz searched frantically for a hiding place.

First she tried to re-open the door to the girl's locker room but it was no use. Claire Brewster was obviously holding it shut and there was no way Lydia could get back in that way.

Then she started exploring the doors on the opposite side of the hallway. But they were all locked except for one at the far end. By then Lydia started to see other students enter the hallway. Students who turned to look at her and exclaimed, "Hey! Isn't that --"

Time to go, thought Lydia. She opened the door and immediately closed it after her, only to find herself in a darkened room. No, not just a darkened room. She was at the top of a darkened stairway.

She reached for a light switch and saw that she was indeed at the top of a stairway -- a stairway that led to the school basement. A most excellent hiding place.

Unfortunately for Lydia, she was not the only one hiding in the basement. A couple of older girls were down there as well, each of them nursing cigarettes.

Both of them took one look at naked Lydia and smiled.

"I must be dreaming," said one of them. "That could not be a naked Lydia Deetz that I see up there by the door."

"If you're dreaming," said the second one, "then I must be dreaming the same dream. I too see a naked Lydia. Perhaps we should go up and greet her."

"Why not?" said the first one. "We both owe her so much for making us look so bad in English class."

As the two girls advanced up the stairs toward Lydia, Lydia began to wonder if she would have been better off taking her chances in the hallway.
