Chapter 4

Next on the agenda: ! But on who?
Lucina
Wario knew he wanted to take his **** on the female fighters who humiliated him earlier, but he didn't know where exactly they would be. He figured though that if he loitered around one of the Mansion's public areas long enough, he was bound to run into one of them, alongside someone he could potentially swap something of theirs with. So with an eager grin on his face he made his way down the hallway in the opposite direction of Peach, swapping remote in hand.
Arriving at the Mansion's common area, Wario took a look around. The common area was moderately popular with most of the fighters given the variety of activities available to them, but right now there weren't that many people hanging around. Fox and Falco were playing pool against one another, Red was on the couch watching TV, the Villager was watering the flowers in the windowsill, and off to the side...
Jackpot.
Lucina was standing by the coffee machine, talking to Chrom as he drank from a mug. Wario gritted his teeth at the sight of the blue-haired girl. He could still hear the sound of his shield shattering from one hit of her sword. His shield had been at nearly full charge, so to Wario it didn't make sense how one blow was able to break it completely. She must have hacked the shield matrix somehow to make it so that it would ignore her sword. It was the only explanation that made sense.
He saw Lucina let out a small chuckle at something her father said. They were probably talking about the match, and how good it felt to humiliate the greatest fighter in the tournament. Maybe even laughing at the thought of him crying over his loss, and how he would never figure out how she cheated against him.
Well Wario did figure it out. And he was ready to get his **** on that uppity little princess.
Before he did though, he fiddled around with the remote, adjusting the awareness settings. Unlike with Peach, he didn't want Lucina to be ignorant of the humiliation that was about to befall her. He was still wary about turning it completely on for everyone though, so for the moment he set the device to make it so that only Lucina would be aware of the change while everyone else (other than himself, of course) would remain ignorant.
Once that was done, he pointed the remote at Lucina and registered her as Target #1. He looked around the room for his second target. At first he was disappointed at his limited options, but then he saw the perfect candidate entering the room. He registered them as Target #2, then looked down at the remote and selected the swap he wanted to make.
"Wa ha ha..." he chuckled softly to himself as he hit the Swap button and awaited the results...
"I don't know how you do it, Father," Lucina said with a sigh.
"Do what?" Chrom asked, leaning his back against the wall as he waited for his coffee to cool off enough to drink.
"Handle the situation with..." she paused, unsure of how she wanted to refer to them before eventually settling on, "...the Robins. It's bad enough that there's two of them, but they're from different Outrealms, and... opposite genders."
"Yes? And?"
"And you're just fine with it!" Lucina said in frustration, "I mean, one of them is your wife, allegedly, and the other is-"
"Allegedly?" Chrom interrupted with a frown, "I remember marrying your mother very clearly, Lucina."
"I remember her too," Lucina said, "But I also have memories of the other Robin, the one who is a man. As well as my other mother... I don't know which set of memories are real."
"They're both real," Chrom said simply, "It's just that they're real in different universes."
"But... but which universe are we from?" Lucina asked, "We have memories of our lives in both worlds, but there's only one of each us. The same version of us can't exist in two worlds at once, right?... Oh gods, could we?"
Seeing his daughter beginning to have an existential crisis, Chrom said, "Lucina, this place exists outside of the normal bounds of time and space. I don't think there's any way for the two of us to figure this one out on our own."
"But don't you feel guilty about having romantic feelings for someone other than Mother?" Lucina asked, "Other Mother I mean, not Mother Mother... I mean Robin Mother... ugh.."
"I get what you mean," Chrom said, before admitting, "I do a little bit. But at the same time, I know that as mixed up as things feel now, we'll go home eventually. And when we do, things will be clear again. And regardless of which world or which 'Mother' we're talking about, my relationship with her is strong enough that this experience won't change anything."
"I don't know... I still remember when Mother thought you were having an affair with me." Lucina recollected, shuddering at that awkward memory, "And of the two mothers I remember, Robin was the more understanding..."
"Which is why just to be safe I am avoiding doing anything untoward with Robin while we are here," Chrom said, "If nothing else, I can at least claim to have plausible deniability."
Lucina let out a little chuckle, "That's unusually shrewd of you, Father. Perhaps you aren't from the same world as me either."
"In a sense, that's already true," Chrom pointed out, "Thanks to you, the future you come from no longer exists. In a way, you could say that your future is a completely separate world from mine. But that doesn't mean you aren't my daughter. This situation with Robin isn't much different in my eyes. Male or female, Robin is my closest friend. That is something I can always count on, no matter how muddled things become."
"I... I never thought of it that way," Lucina said, "Perhaps I could do the same... focus on the constants between the two worlds, and worry about the details when they become relevant. It won't be easy, but it might be the only way to maintain my sanity throughout this tournament."
"As long as you don't do anything you would regret in either world, I'm sure you'll be just fine," Chrom said.
"Thank you, Father," Lucina said, "I knew I could count on your wisdom."
"Don't give me all the credit," Chrom said, "Robin... the male Robin, helped me work through this on the first night. Some of that wisdom is his."
"Just some of it?" Lucina asked with a smile.
"M-Maybe a bit more than some," Chrom stammered, "But my point is, Robin's the brains of our relationship, regardless of which one you're talking about. Perhaps it might help for you to talk to the female Robin about this."
"Perhaps..." Lucina said, "But to be honest, it's strange talking to her. She always acts so... motherly toward me. I know she doesn't mean to, but..."
Lucina stopped talking as she suddenly felt a tingling sensation engulf her entire body. It only lasted for a moment, but when it dissipated Lucina couldn't help but feel like something had changed. She blinked, and saw...
What swap has Lucina undergone?
