Chapter 16

What do you do?
Let the moment pass
Something about the way her voice softens there makes your chest tighten a little. Because you know she means it. You know how much pressure she puts on herself constantly while still trying to smile through most of it.
For a second, neither of you says anything.
The ocean breeze drifts faintly through the open patio doors nearby while sunlight glimmers across the water outside. Around you, plates clink softly against tables while distant conversations blend into the background hum of the café.
Jane stirs the straw through her iced coffee absentmindedly.
“I don’t know,” she says quietly after a moment. “Sometimes it just feels like everybody else handles it better than me.”
You lean back slightly in your chair, listening.
She laughs softly under her breath.
“Which logically I know probably isn’t true,” Jane admits. “But still.”
“You’re hard on yourself,” you say simply.
“Yeah,” she sighs. “Probably.”
A small silence settles afterward. Not awkward exactly. Just unfinished.
You chose not to reassure Jane.
Relationship Status: -0%
Boyfriend Points: -2
Jane understands that you listened, but part of her still wishes you had said more.
Jane will remember this.- - - - - -
Jane glances down toward the table for another second before forcing a small smile back onto her face.
Thankfully, the waitress appears with the food before the conversation can linger there any longer.
And immediately Jane visibly tries to brighten.
“Oh my god,” she says while staring at the tacos in front of her. “These look insane.”
You laugh softly while watching her grab one immediately.
“Your entire personality changes around food.”
“As it should.”
She takes a bite before closing her eyes dramatically.
“Okay,” Jane says seriously. “I would die for these tacos.”
“That feels excessive.”
“You haven’t even tried them yet.”
You take a bite a second later.
Unfortunately, she’s right.
“Okay,” you admit. “These are actually ridiculous.”
She points at you immediately.
“See? I have good taste.”
“That’s debatable.”
“Excuse me?” she laughs.
“You willingly put One Direction between country breakup songs earlier.”
“That playlist had emotional range.”
“It had emotional damage.”
She laughs loudly enough that a couple nearby glances over briefly.
For a little while, things settle back into something lighter.
She steals fries from your plate even though she insisted she “wasn’t that hungry.” You argue about concerts again. At one point she gets distracted because a seagull outside steals part of someone’s sandwich near the patio.
“Oh my god,” Jane whispers while staring out the window. “That bird is evil.”
You laugh quietly.
The conversation keeps moving after that.
But every now and then, you notice her drift slightly quieter again between moments.
Not upset.
Not angry.
Just thoughtful.
Like part of her mind never fully left the earlier conversation.
At one point, she absently twists the straw in her drink while staring out toward the water.
“You okay?” you ask casually.
She blinks once before immediately smiling again.
“Mhm.”
But the smile feels smaller this time.
Softer around the edges.
Like she’s trying not to bring the mood down.
The rest of lunch still stays warm overall. Comfortable. Easy. The two of you still laugh together. Still tease each other. Still fall naturally into familiar conversation the way you always do.
But something subtle shifts underneath it.
A little less brightness in her voice.
A little more quiet between conversations.
A little more distance in the way she keeps looking out toward the ocean afterward.
Eventually the plates empty out and the two of you stand to leave.
Outside, the afternoon sunlight spills warmly across the boardwalk while ocean air moves through the street again.
Jane slips her hand into yours automatically once you step onto the sidewalk.
The touch is still familiar.
Still affectionate.
But quieter now somehow.
She walks close beside you while the two of you head slowly back toward the beach together, her thumb absentmindedly brushing once against your hand before going still again.
And for the first time all day, the silence between you feels just slightly heavier than before.
What's next?
The Girlfriend Effect
Your life with your girlfriend
Your girlfriend is clingy, flirty, always-all-over-you. It’s the kind of relationship where your girlfriend is basically attached to your side 24/7. She steals your hoodies, acts seductive whenever she gets the chance, and hides how exhausted she really is from nursing school and nonstop work shifts. Between late night drives, random dates, movie nights, trips together, shared showers, and lazy mornings half asleep in bed. The story follows all the small everyday moments in the relationship as it slowly gets deeper and more personal over time. The choices you make affect how emotionally and physically close the two of you become. You can comfort her when nursing school gets overwhelming, flirt with her during quieter moments, help her through stressful days, or lean harder into your sex life of the relationship as the story progresses.
