Chapter 2 by renokun renokun

What's next?

Let's start

Well, let's get started with the day. I looked at myself in the mirror. John Doe, senior year of high school. We're in the middle of the semester right now and I guess it shows on my face. I look more weary and tired than the last year. I didn't even realize that was possible.

I wasn't in completely bad shape though. We had just finished our mid-semester exams and I can feel the colors coming back to my body. At least before they disappear in another few months. I have an average built and average height. Just what you'd expect from a self-insert protagonist.

I dress up and get ready for school to start. I'm still living in my parents house but the two of them are having a vacation in Hawaii. They'll be back in about a weeks time but until then it's just me and my younger sister, Sophie.

"Sophie! Breakfast in ten!," I called out to her room at the end of the hallway before walking down the stairs. As the older kid in the family, I prepare meals for the both of us while our parents are away. I can't wait for them to come back and I won't need to do this tiring chore.

I easily whip up a breakfast meal of sausages, eggs and beans in a matter of minutes when I hear Sophie come down the stairs.

"Morning, big Bro."
"Morning, sleepyhead. Fix your hair."

Sophie pouted at me and took her hand mirror out of her schoolbag. Short, messy brown hair simply let loose, it's obvious she just woke up when I called her for breakfast. Her hair stuck out at odd angles and looked to be a real hassle to fix as she brushed it back into place.

"You need help with that?" I asked, placing her meal on the table in front of her.
"Could I get a glass of milk, please?" she replied, cheekily.
"Sure, sure. Here you go princess."
"Hehe thanks!"
"When are Mom and Dad coming home?" Sophie suddenly enquired.
"Hmm, I think they said they'll be back in a week," I said while munching down on some sausages. "Can't really remember."
"Ohh, guess we won't have the house to ourselves anymore, huh? Better hurry up and bring a girl home before they get back, big Bro," she winked.

I let out a sigh and replied, "You being the only girl in the house is a big enough hassle, as it is."
Sophie pouted again, "I think you're just not popular with the ladies," she teased.
"Alright, alright. I don't want to hear that from you Sophie, when your only friend is Monica."
"She's not my only friend, okay? She's just... my best friend," she retorted.

I get up and pick my bag. "I'm done. When you've finished, make sure to wash up."
"Yup!" said Sophie.

As I head to the door, my vision started to blur and I was suddenly met with a splitting headache. It hurt really bad and I dropped to my knee, clutching my head.

"Ugh!" I cried out from the pain.
"Big bro, are you okay?" Sophie ran towards me with a worried look on her face.
I look at her and smile. "It's fine. Just some head pain from the exam."

Sophie was patting my back, with a worried expression when she suddenly flustered.
"Huh, Sophie what's wrong?"
"N-nothing." she replied shakily, looking away from me. Her hand was still on my back but she wasn't patting anymore, moreso like stroking my back.

I gave her a confused look before standing up again. "I'm alright. Is Monica going to be coming by again today?" I said, trying to change the subject.
"Why do you care about Monica!?" she suddenly blurted out.
"Wha-?" I said, stunned.
"Uh, no... Wha?" stammered Sophie. "Umm... toilet!"

Sophie ran to the toilet before I had the chance to ask her anything. Bewildered and with my temple still throbbing slightly, I decided to just head for school. Dealing with my little sister's antics are just going to make it worse.
