Let’s run away together. That’s what she said.

Run away. Just forget all our troubles and run. We’ll go someplace where nobody has ever heard of us. We’ll start a new life away from this great gray city, a new life together.
That’s exactly what we did.

It’s been about two years since that night in the farmhouse. Sara got the divorce. When it went public, Elric took a hit in the polls, but word soon leaked out that his wife ran off wife a disgraced ex-cop. The man actually had the gall to go on T.V. and publicly forgive his wife for her infidelity. He played the hurt husband so well that it won him the election. We watched his victory celebration on television and saw him get a kiss from the mistress that most people knew nothing about. Elric’s lawyers managed to get the courts to rule that Sara was the one who broke up the marriage. They also fought to try to get Sara’s accounts, but gave up after an anonymous someone mailed Elric a picture of him kissing another girl outside a hotel.

We got married about a year after the divorce was finalized. Sara wanted to wait so her family could come to terms with everything that had happened. I told her I would wait until the earth turned to dust and the stars had faded away if she wanted me to. She laughed and said it might take her mother slightly less time than that.

We live in the suburbs now. I write novels about the cases I’ve had. They’re received fairly well and I’ve managed to get a deal with a minor publishing house. Sara founded and runs several charities, she doesn’t take home much, but she is happy.

The sadness that once filled Sara’s eyes is gone, replaced by the shine of a joyful soul. I feel free for the first time in ages, like a giant weight has been lifted from me.

I look outside and I see blue skies, a bright yellow sun, and only white clouds.
