Lea glanced at the clock on her kitchen wall. It was just past seven, and she'd spent the afternoon tidying up, not that Tori would see much beyond the foyer, but old habits from her modeling days lingered—presentation mattered, even in solitude. Her outfit was simple: fitted jeans that hugged her newly toned legs from those gym sessions, a soft blouse in muted sage, and sneakers she'd bought on a whim last week. No makeup beyond a swipe of tinted balm, but she'd let her blonde hair fall loose, waves framing her face like an afterthought.
The doorbell chimed, a melodic trill that echoed through the open living room. Lea smoothed her blouse and opened the door to find Tori standing, keys dangling from one hand, her athletic build clad in loose cargo shorts and a team jersey that read "The Pride" in bold letters arched over a vibrant rainbow emblem. The colors popped against the black fabric, unexpected and unapologetic.
"Wow, I love your outfit. You look really beautiful." Tori said, her voice carrying that familiar warmth, the kind that made Lea's pulse skip without warning. "Thank you," as Lea grabbed her jacket from the hook. "just something I threw together. Lead the way."
They slid into Tori's SUV, a practical model with worn seats and a faint scent of pine air fresher. On the drive to the community center, Lea stole glances at Tori - hands gripping the wheel with casual confidence, fingers long and capable from years of handling basketballs and weights. It reminded her of their training sessions, those moments when Tori's guidance turned a simple lift into something almost intimate.
"So, tell me about The Pride," Lea ventured, breaking the quiet. "How'd you end up on a team with such a... fitting name?" Tori chuckled, eyes on the road. "It started as a rec league for women in the community, but it grew. We're all about owning the court, no holds barred. The rainbow? That's our way of saying we're a family—diverse, loud, unbreakable. Since I'm six feet - two, I play center, so expect some elbows and hustle." Lea nodded, filing away the details. It sounded worlds away from the polished boutiques Michael dragged her to, all champagne flutes and small talk. This felt rawer, more alive.
The community center's parking lot was a patchwork of minivans and sedans, buzzing with arrivals. As they walked toward the entrance, Lea noticed the crowd filtering in: clusters of women chatting animatedly, some holding thermoses, others with signs or team scarves. No rowdy guys yelling from the bleachers, no scattered families with kids in tow. It clicked slowly, like puzzle pieces snapping into place—these weren't just fans; they were partners, girlfriends, wives, woven into the fabric of the night. A woman with silver-streaked hair waved to a player emerging from a side door, their laughter mingling with the squeak of sneakers on pavement. Lea felt a quiet realization settle in, not unwelcome, but shifting the air around her like a subtle current.
Inside, the basketball gym was a hive of energy, the court lined with folding chairs and a smattering of banners. The Pride's side of the bleachers was a riot of rainbow flags and homemade posters, while the opponents— a team called the Thunderbolts—sported sleek blue uniforms. Tori introduced Lea to a few teammates warming up: Jax, a wiry guard with a quick grin, and Lena, the point who high-fived Tori like they shared secrets. Lea settled into a seat near the front, the wooden bench cool against her thighs, as the whistle blew to start.
Tori transformed on the court. As the dominating center, she was a ****, tall, bold, and unyielding, her movements precise yet explosive. She blocked shots with authority, her arms extending like barriers, and rebounded with a ferocity that drew cheers from the stands. Lea watched, mesmerized, as Tori dribbled through defenders, her jersey clinging slightly from the effort, sweat tracing paths down her neck. In one play, Tori leaped for a layup, hanging in the air for a suspended moment before slamming the ball home, the net snapping back with a satisfying swish. The crowd erupted, partners on their feet, and Lea found herself clapping harder than expected, her heart syncing to the rhythm of the game.
The Pride dominated, their passes crisp, their defense a wall. Tori orchestrated much of it, calling plays with sharp gestures, her voice cutting through the din. By halftime, they led by twelve, and Lea caught Tori's eye during a water break—the glance was brief, loaded, Tori's lips curving in a private acknowledgment before she jogged back out. The second half blurred into a symphony of motion: Tori stealing a pass, pivoting on her heel, and sinking a jumper from the key. The final buzzer sounded with The Pride victorious, 78-62, the gym alive with hugs and backslaps.
As the team cooled down, Tori bounded over, towel around her neck, her face flushed and glowing. "What'd you think? Not too rough for a yoga enthusiast?" Lea laughed, standing to meet her. "Rough? You were unstoppable. Like you were born with the ball in your hands." Tori's eyes lingered on Lea's, the proximity of the crowded sideline forcing them closer than usual. "Glad you came. Means a lot." Her hand brushed Lea's arm in a casual thanks, but the contact sparked, a fleeting warmth that made Lea's skin tingle.
The team piled into cars for pizza at a nearby spot called Slice Haven, a no-frills joint with checkered floors and booths that smelled of oregano and melted cheese. The group claimed the back room, tables pushed together in a long feast. Laughter bounced off the walls as stories flew—Jax recounting a botched crossover, Lena teasing Tori about a missed free throw. Lea sat beside Tori, their knees bumping under the table, an accidental rhythm that neither adjusted away from. Plates of pepperoni and veggie supreme circulated, steam rising in lazy curls.
That's when Hildi slid into the seat across from them, a compact woman with a buzz cut and a necklace of colorful beads. She was Tori's closest friend, Lea learned quickly, teammate turned confidante, the one who patched up scrapes and shared post-game debriefs. Hildi had a straightforward way about her, eyes sharp but kind, and as the conversation lulled, she turned to Lea with a conspiratorial lean.
"You must be the Lea I've heard about," Hildi said, popping a crust into her mouth. "Tori's been singing your praises. Says you're picking up weights like a pro." Lea caught Hildi looking at Lea's engagement and wedding ring. "You're married" Hildi said. Lea said "yes I am. Tori asked me to come. We became good friends."
When Tori stepped away to grab sodas, Hildi said "you know, Tori's been through it lately," she said quietly, her voice cutting through the chatter. "Broke up a while ago with her girlfriend, Diane, after years together. It hit her hard - Diane was her forever, or so she thought. Left Tori questioning everything. But talking about you? It's different. She lights up Lea. Haven't seen that spark in Tori since before the split."
Lea absorbed the words, a mix of surprise and something tender unfurling in her chest. Tori returned then, balancing drinks, oblivious to the exchange, and the moment passed into easy banter. But as the evening wound down, plates cleared and goodbyes exchanged, Lea's mind replayed Hildi’s insight. Tori had layers, pains etched beneath that confident stride, and somehow, Lea was part of easing them.
The drive back was quieter, the city lights smudging past the windows like watercolor strokes. Tori drummed her fingers on the wheel, the post-win high fading into reflection. Lea waited, sensing the shift, then said "Hildi told me about your relationship and break-up with Diane. Also, about the hurt you're feeling with not being together anymore."
"Hildi has a big mouth sometimes," Tori said with a half-smile, eyes flicking to Lea. "But she's right about Diane. We were together five years. Thought it was forever. The breakup was messy, left me raw for months." Lea turned in her seat, the seatbelt a gentle restraint. "I'm sorry. That sounds heavy. But you're here, owning it. Strong as ever."
Tori shrugged, but her gaze softened. "Strong's one word for it. Guarded, maybe. Until lately." The car slowed at a red light, and the silence stretched, charged with the unsaid. Their eyes met in the dashboard glow, Tori's hand resting on the gear shift, close enough that Lea could see the faint calluses from endless drills.
The light changed, and they pulled into Lea's driveway, the house looming welcoming yet empty under the porch light. Tori turned off the engine, the sudden quiet amplifying the hum of crickets outside. They sat there, neither moving to exit, the air thick with the residue of the night—the game's adrenaline, Hild's revelation, the easy orbit of their knees at the table.
"Tori," Lea said softly, "I had such a wonderful time with you tonight. I'm so glad we became friends," her voice threading the space between them. "Tori," Lea said with deep feeling, "before I go, would you please kiss me? I've never been kissed by a woman - passionately that is." Tori's breath caught, her eyes searching Lea's face, the invitation hanging like a held breath. The distance closed, inch by electric inch, the world narrowing to the promise of contact - lips hovering, hearts racing in tandem, the precipice of surrender just a whisper away. Tori leaned in towards Lea, her lips brushed Lea's in a tentative, soft, gentle, kiss, then deeper as Lea parted her mouth. Tongues met, exploratory and hungry. They separated. Lea thanked Tori again for a wonderful time, said goodnight, and went into the house.
