Language & Voice, Randomly Chosen

Jim couldn't decide which of the listed modes to start with, so he said to Jas, "Pick a number between one and six."

"Five," she said immediately.

"Language & Voice," said Jim to himself, twisting the watch's crown until the dialogue balloon icon appeared. There didn't seem to be any instructions in the manual for how to use the mode, but some slider bars appeared on the watch's face. Jim moved the "PT" slider to the right, but nothing seemed to happen. He pressed the button on the side of the watch to see if that would do anything.

"Four score and seven years ago," Jas began to recite, but in a high, squeaky voice, "our fathers brought forth on this continent..."

Jim moved the "PT" slider back to the left, and her voice began to lower as she continued the speech. "Must mean 'pitch,'" Jim thought, as he returned the slider to the middle, making her voice sound like its normal self.

He scrolled down the list, chose "PR," and moved that one over. "We have fucking come to dedicate a fucking portion of that field..." "I guess that's casual profanity, something like that."

Another random choice, "ST," and as he moved it right, she gained an accent and sounded as if she might be losing some of her English. "...brave fuckin' men, living, dead, who st-struggled, have con-con --"

Jim clicked the button on the side again, mercifully stopping her from trying to speak the words of the Gettysburg Address. So maybe that means 'stereotype'? She does sound more 'Asian.' He said to Jas, "We haven't talked much. Tell me about yourself."

"I from fuckin' San Francisco," she said, then frowned. "Shit, why I talk funny?"

"Don't worry too much about it," Jim said.

"Fuck, okay," said Jas.

Despite the non-user-friendly nature of the Language & Voice mode controls, Jim had managed to have Jas talking in a stereotypical "Asian" voice and using frequent casual profanity.
