Chapter 2

Who moves in?
Katy, a quiet bookish girl
The day arrived that Katy would be coming to stay with them. She had her own car and would be driving herself with all her belongings.
Amy had made sure the room she would be using was clean and welcoming. They had put a desk and an office chair in there so she would have a place to study and made sure the bedding was fresh. They had made sure that she would only need to bring clothes and personal items and suggested she bring some things to decorate to make her feel more at home.
There was a knock at the door and Amy was almost giddy with excitement as she pulled Peter out of his chair so they could answer the door together. Amy flung the door open with an enthusiastic “Welcome.”
AT the door was a meek young woman, Katy. She was very thin, her long mousy hair was unstyled and covered a fair bit of her face. She was in an oversized hoodie, jeans that looked like they were made for a guy and scuffed-up trainers. Her hazel eyes were wide in surprise at the enthusiastic greeting. She seemed almost frightened by Amy but then she looked over and saw Peter and visibly relaxed. “Hi, uncle Peter. Thanks for having me.”
Amy looked at Peter. “She called you uncle Peter. That is so cute. Can I be aunty Amy?”
“That’s up to Katy,” said Peter. “Hello Katy, come in.”
“Yes, yes, come in.” Amy was very excited and clearly wanted to make friends. “How was your journey? Did you travel far? How long have you been driving? It can’t be long. Would you like a drink? Tea, coffee, wine? Is that okay? Yes of course it is, you are over eighteen. I think we have some beer if you prefer.”
“I’d like a tea please.,” Katy answered meekly.
“I’ll have one too please dear,” Peter requested.
“Of course darling. The kitchen is this way, Katy. Come and sit down. You must be tired after your drive.”
Peter and Katy sat at the table while Amy busied herself with the kettle. Peter could see that Katy was a bit overwhelmed. “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to her and she’ll calm down eventually. She’s just excited to have you here.”
Katy gave him a shy appreciative smile.
“It’s been years since I last saw you. You’re all grown up but I’d have recognised you in an instant,” he told her.
“I know. I look pretty much the same. Thank you for taking me in. I know it means a lot to mum and dad and I really wanted to study here.”
“It’s a pleasure sweetie,” called Amy. “We know this isn’t what most students dream of but we want you to feel like you have as much freedom as you would if you were living in a shared house. Well, maybe not quite that much freedom. I remember trashing our house a few times with parties but you know, no curfews or dinner times or not being allowed to bring boys over or any of that.”
“Oh. I wasn’t planning anything like that,” said Katy
“What she means is, you are a young adult now and as long as you treat us with a little respect then we will not treat you as anything other than an adult.”
“Thanks, uncle Peter. I will.”
They exchanged pleasantries and Amy showed Katy her room and insisted Peter bring in the things from Katy’s car. There wasn’t much. A couple of bags of clothes and a couple of boxes of belongings as well as some rolled-up posters. He took them up and found Amy sitting on Katy’s bed chatting away. Katy seemed like she was getting used to her.
He hadn’t known what to expect from Katy. She had still been little while he still saw Jack and Lynn regularly. She hadn’t changed much. Peter had wondered if puberty would have made a woman out of her or changed the quiet girl into a rebellious teen but she was still so meek. There was a little pang of disappointment. Despite his serious nature, he wasn’t without a lustful side and the idea of a young woman living in the house had held some appeal but Katy was cute but so quiet and dowdy that she wasn’t about to spark any fantasies. Not that he would have done anything. He just liked the idea of a little eye candy. He didn’t miss what he never had and was happy to see that she looked a little more relaxed.
After a while, Peter managed to pull Amy away and they let Katy settle into her new home.
