Chapter 4
by Vain
But how much closer does it get you, on your way to your final goal...?
Just a bit could be quite enough
"But, I thought you called me over to sit for your kids...?" Sarah asks after a short pause, during which she takes another few sips of her wine, and is obviously still a bit tentative regarding your plans for today as you notice her glancing off towards the stairs, as if expecting your wife and kids to come walking down any moment.
She seems undecided though, whether she actually wants them to show up or not, and you can tell that her curiosity still shines through her usually timid facade.
Perhaps the wine is helping with her mood as well, even if it's far from as potent as other things that you've got in cabinet, or else she's simply intrigued by your odd token of generosity.
"Well, yes..." You start to confess, in a slow and thoughtful tone, before deciding to stick with your original plan and tell her an easy lie. She'd likely be able and see right through it, but at least it would provide her with a reason be there in the first place.
So you tell her that you called her while your wife was on her way home with the kids, but due to a change of plans they decided to head right home to her parents instead, and would likely stay away for the rest of the weekend.
"And when I was about to call you back, you were already on my doorstep." You finish the story with an apologizing gesture, and point again to the bottle of wine. "So, this is the very least I could do, really..."
"That's so kind of you, Mr.Doe." Sarah smiles at you softly, in a way that makes it difficult to perceive if she's actually believing your white little lie, or simply deciding to play along for now. Whatever the reason it seems like she's fine to stay for a while at least, and she starts to relax while leaning back in the couch with her glass of mild wine in hand.
"And I'll still pay you double, of course." You continue, as you remember what you promised over the phone for her trouble, which seems to both make her happy and just a little bit more suspicious at once. You've only got yourself to blame for your choice of words though, as you come to realize that it does make you sound like you're trying to win her over with such a cheap sum of money...
Has the damage already been done, or can it even be reversed for your profit...?
