Join an online fandom

For some reason, the Task that just appeared is looking the most interesting by far. Your first thought on which one to look into would be that anime you just binged, but there are apparently another two seasons you haven’t seen yet, and you’re sure that jumping into that fandom would spoil the rest of the show for you for sure.

Instead, you let your eyes wander over to a small shelf of books. Wait, there’s that fantasy series you read ages ago! You’ve always loved it, and over the course of your adolescent years you read every book in it at least twice. Is there a fandom for that?

Tentatively, you go onto a search engine and type in the name of the fantasy series and the word ‘fandom’, oddly enough afraid there will be no results and your reawakened love for it will only shine in you.

That fate does not befall you. You’re drawn immediately to Tumblr, where there is amazing fanart of all the characters. Looking at all of it reminds you of your favorite parts of the series, of the characters you put so much of your young heart into. Getting really excited, you also find text posts talking about the characters, mini-essays defending different viewpoints.

Some of them are ideas you’ve never thought of before! You find yourself forming equally strong opinions, sometimes in favor of whoever you’re reading, sometimes against. You quickly make an account on the website and launch into the Notes, Reblogging people you agree with and venting frustrations on those you don’t.

It turns out this is just the beginning of your journey. A mention of some website called Archive of Our Own on a piece of fanart leads you to discovering fanfiction, and that eats up the rest of your day and several hours of your night too. You can’t stop from reading this stuff. They’re such good writers!

You stay away from the lewd ones at first, until a particular description catches your eye, something cute between the main hero and his best friend. You didn’t look at the rating or the tags (or at least that’s your excuse) and you only realize it’s slash when they start kissing. You don’t stop reading there though, your eyes trailing down the screen as they take each other’s clothes off, then the fun really starts. You go from smut to smut, all of it M/M, and you love it. Only after reaching climax just as the protagonist of the books does the same in his mortal enemies asshole do you remember to go and select that you finished the Task. After all, you definitely did Join the online fandom. From there, you’re able to also mark several new Tasks as done, like Argue about fiction online and Touch yourself to lewd fanfics.

You want to laugh looking at those higher stats. As if you’re that much of a nerd...but this time, as the changes take you, you notice them immediately. How could you not? To begin with, you start to pack on a little weight. Nothing too much, but you’ve definitely gone from a ‘normal’ weight to a ‘chubby’ one. Very little of that goes to your boobs, instead focusing on your stomach and butt. It doesn’t just go there, of course, you become a little softer all over, from head to toe.

Running over to a mirror to look at the changes, you see more of them happening with your face. Freckles appear all over your face, down your neck and into your upper chest as well. Your nose gets a little congested, and it becomes more natural for you to breathe through your mouth. Then it becomes impossible to see what else happens to you, as your vision goes from near-perfect to terrible. Nearly blind, you instinctively know where your glasses are, groping around until you find them and put them on your face. They’re thick of rim and lens, and feel right on your face despite the fact you’ve never worn glasses before in your life. The last change you can see happens to your hair, making it look frizzier and more unkempt.

On the whole, you look like a complete nerd. Confused, you look back at your phone, and reach the unmistakable conclusion. Your phone must have done this to you! It’s that app! You go back to look at it, and see several new Tasks have appeared that you’ve yet to do. Role play as a character online and Commission a dirty story. You find yourself knowing everything those Task names imply, and also that your brain in general is full of so much more nerdy stuff than it was before. Honestly, you kind of like that part. It feels...comforting, like you’re part of a special group. Is...becoming a nerd really so bad?
