Chapter 2 by ComfortingShadow ComfortingShadow

Which of your former friends do you reunite with first?

Jenny

You are in luck! Jenny's now a "city-greeter," and the city border is only 5 blocks behind you.

You make the trip without incident, although you have to cover your nose along the way; the smell is HIDEOUS!

Upon reaching the city border, you notice that there is a lake nearby, completely unpolluted. Near it, there is a very large hill covered in genevrette herbs and Holland's Glory flowers.

Idly, as you look for Jenny, you pick up a genevrette herb. These were always her favorite herbs, you remember. Genevrette is an important ingredient in a wine very popular in France. Jenny mostly liked them because she loved the way the word rolled off her tongue. From her teen years well into adulthood, this stuck with her.

It doesn't take long for you to find Jenny, and unfortunately she doesn't have any work at the moment, figuratively speaking. Her job is to greet people who come into the city, but at the moment no one else is here. Jenny's just sitting at the side of the road, kicking her feet and humming to herself while looking around restlessly.

You call out her name, but you're too far away and she doesn't hear you. The gravel of the road rolls beneath your feet, almost but not quite causing you to slip, as you take a few steps closer and call out her name again.

This time she looks up. Upon seeing your face, her eyes widen, and she jumps to her feet.

"John!!!" she shouts, dashing forward a good 10 feet to catch you in a bear-hug, burying her face into your chest for a while.

After a few moments, she disengages.

"It's been years!" she points out mock-accusingly. "Where have you been?!"

"I've been an escort in another city," you point out, grinning.

Jenny frowns.

"I was considering being an escort myself, because I seem to make people happy," she admits. "Unfortunately, although I'm in my twenties, they said I didn't look old enough to hire me. I look childish, they said. I hate being so SHORT, and having small breasts, and---"

You interrupt.

"Well you've always looked like a woman to ME," you say.

That brightens her expression. She fidgets with her pigtails, nervous for some godforsaken reason. She turns to face you again.

"Today's been boring," she says, spinning around on one foot for emphasis. "No visitors at all. Nobody to greet."

She's smiling. Maybe she's not very upset about that.

"'Til you came along," she clarifies, causing you to amend that last thought.

Then she looks thoughtful.

"You're an escort, you said," she ponders. "That means you take other women out on dates to make them feel better, and they pay you for the privilege. Did you have sex with any of them?"

"Yes," you say bluntly. "Is that a problem?"

Jenny shakes her head, giggling.

"No problem; it's just I'm finding it hard to imagine my personal hero back when we were kids is all grown up and having SEX," she chokes out through a sunny grin. "You just seemed too gentle for something like that."

"Gentle am I?" you mock-growl, tackling her and sending the two of you rolling down the hill, accidentally crushing several Holland's Glories in the process.

After the two of you finish breathing in the gentle, calm air of the environment (having barely missed rolling into the lake), Jenny asks you a question.

"Hey, shouldn't your other friends know you're back?!" she exclaims. "I mean you left quite an impression and...um..."

You have to stop and think about it. You and Jenny are having fun as usual, due to her sincere and sweethearted personality. But she's right; she can't monopolize your whole day. But does it have to be a whole day? What do you do?

Do you stay with Jenny a bit longer, or do you reunite with another friend?
