Jen pretends to be just another lawyer

“It’s about time I found you,” Jen said as she noisily trotted up to Jan, pretending to be out of breath and out of shape. Jen even undid the top button of her blouse to enhance the effect, panting softly as she continued. “You have got to be the toughest client I have ever had! Assuming you agree to accept my services, of course.”

Meanwhile Joystick, who’d swung the safe’s steel harness off her back and swung around to face Jen as soon as she began clopping down the alley, looked angry, then confused, then skeptical.

“Who the hell are you?” Jan asked, still on edge.

“My name is Jennifer Walters, metahuman attorney at law,” Jen said, holding out her hand for Joystick to shake. Jan didn’t respond, so Jen continued: “I’m an attorney that specializes in superhuman legal cases, and I think you could use some legal representation. Pro bono, of course.”

“What?” Jan stammered, dropping the safe heavily on the ground in front of her door.

“It means, ‘for free’,” Jennifer explained in a whisper.

“I know what pro bono means, you dumb ambulance-chaser,” Jan said, irritated. “I mean what do you think you’re doing here?” Joystick gestured to the empty and darkling alleyway.

“Oh, well, I’ve been trying to get your address for weeks now, and I just managed to get your address from another client known as Copycat.”

Jan’s mouth shut, her stance became defensive, and she backed towards her door.

“Copycat sent you?”

“Yes, that’s right,” Jen nodded ditzily. Courts ate this stuff up--a combination of youthful initiative and naiveté was always a winner.

“Alright, then,” Jan said slowly as she turned and keyed open her door. She swung the vault, loudly, down a set of stairs proceeding directly from the door and motioned gracefully. “After you.”
