Chapter 9 by Lyingbastard
Hike some more?
It wouldn't be a SWTOR quest if it wasn't drawn out
The wilderness on Odessen is quite pleasant, a temperate forest and hills, without the Killik hives in comparable areas of Alderaan. The Outlander had delved into a hive as part of a mission once, and wanted never to do so again. Pushing back the memories of glittering chitin and the wet spatter of organic weapons, he realized Senya had said something. "What's that?"
"I said, I did research on you. After you killed Valkorian. I asked myself, 'Who could this Outlander be, to defeat the Emperor himself?' I expected some master of The ****, some warrior demon from beyond. A walking apocalypse. Instead, I got you. You'll forgive me if I felt somewhat disappointed at the time."
"People underestimating me is a big reason I'm still here and they aren't," the Outlander responded. "So what did you find out? You've never really asked me anything about myself."
"You were... puzzling. 8 years ago, a hired gun with no name anyone cared about walked into a cantina in Hutta and signed up with a pair of bounty hunters whose glory days were past, with a bright young technical assistant. Pretty, too. I think your file mentioned you two were married?"
"Mako. Yeah. I loved her, she loved me. But she couldn't stand losing me. The others looked for a while, but she quit the crew, quit the business, left to start a new life somewhere. For what it's worth, I hope it's a good one. She deserves that."
"You have an entire intelligence department at your command, with access to Imperial, Republic, Hutt, and Zakuul databases. Surely it wouldn't be hard to find her."
The Outlander shrugged. "Surely it wouldn't. When you get right down to it, finding people who don't want to be found is my job. But that's not the point. She chose to end the marriage, rather than wait. And, you know, last year or so, I haven't been laying low. She could have gotten a message to Gault, or Hylo, without much trouble. But she hasn't. So she doesn't want to get back with me. She's moved on. And so have I. I'll cherish my time with her in memory. That's about all I can do."
"I'm sorry if I brought up an uncomfortable subject."
"It's alright. Now, let's see... you said something about that filthy cantina in Nemro's town on Hutta where this all got started."
"Right. After that, it's hard to make sense of. You worked for the Hutts, Imperials, you killed Sith on Dromund Kaas, you hunted with the Mandalorians, you fought Mandalorians, you were declared the most wanted terrorist in the Republic, which was later shown to be a fabrication that brought down the Chancellor, assassinations here, peace-making there. A truly impressive rap sheet, even without the lies. You're a legend among bounty hunters. You've assisted T.H.O.R.N. with Rakghoul outbreaks, delved Gree artifacts on Ilum, crushed pirate gangs, wiped out rampaging hordes before they could slaughter innocent civilians. A hero and a villain most foul. The more I learned, the more I was... intrigued. "
"And now you've known me for a while, first-hand. Still disappointed?"
Senya gave him a legitimate smile. "Not remotely. And I still have a lot to learn about you."
"Well, one of my favorite meals is bantha sausage with peppers and onions, either with noodles or in a roll, and my favorite color is blue but I look surprisingly good in purple, if that helps," The Outlander said.
"Good to know, but it's not really what I meant. No, what I mean, is how you can do so many things wrong, or at least differently, and still succeed. In fact, you manage to take things that should make you ****, and grow more powerful from them. You show mercy to your defeated enemies, and instead of stabbing you in the back, they stand by your side. You allow insubordinate behavior, and instead of becoming an anarchic mob, your followers respect you. You expend resources helping the weak instead of using them to grow your own strength. Mutual enemies with eons of bad blood between them do not hesitate to work together on your behalf. When defeated, your allies do not lose faith and abandon you, they lift you back up. You have no heritage, no inherited title, no family wealth, no **** Mastery, no means of forcing people to obey you, and yet they come from across the galaxy to offer you their sword. You are everything Valkorian was not. And yet, you have made yourself an Emperor, the same as he did."
"I'm no Emperor. I'm just a guy trying to do what's right for the galaxy."
"By leading an alliance with the power to lead, defend, and rebuild. You may not want to wear the crown, but it is yours all the same. The Eternal Throne does not suffer pretenders, but time and again it has presented itself to you."
"So you just like me because I've got a fancy chair, I see it now."
Senya laughed. "Who said I liked you?"
