Chapter 7
by
Cantalope
What's next?
It doesn't work
You blink away the flash for a moment before scowling at Roy, happy feelings be damned, "Roy what the hell? You can't go around shining light in people's eyes, what's wrong with you?" The reaction is so sudden you're a little caught off guard, Roy turns white as a sheet and takes a step back as though you'd just threatened him. Which, frankly, you just might. "I keep seeing flashes around the house, was that you? It keeps making me pass out Roy!" You your foot on the first step and Roy flees back to his room, flashlight in tow.
You sit on the stairs for a moment, too confused to be really angry although the drugs probably helped. You'd always thought of Roy as a good boy, someone you could trust but... had he somehow found out about your weakness to bright light? Had he been using it against you? When you thought back, you remember a lot of weird jumps and blanks over the last couple days, "That little shit!" Your head is starting to clear and, in the absence of medication to calm you down, you were absolutely livid.
You storm upstairs, and pound on your wayward son's door. "ROY! Get out here, NOW!" You'd never been the main authority, you'd let Charlie discipline the boys on the rare occasions they acted up around you (usually involving some kind of peeping), but Roy was a grown ass man and he was going to face the consequences of his actions! You take a deep breath as the door opens, ready to launch into all the problems you'd been having over the last couple days because of him- FLASH.
You blink wearily, scattered thoughts and whispers swirling around your head like a dust devil. For a moment they seem clear...

... but when you try to think about them they slip out of your grasp like slimy eels. You look up to see Roy watching you nervously. How did you end up inside his room? You were sitting on his bed, feet up and seemingly relaxed... but weren't you angry with him? You could have sworn... you shake your head. You couldn't have been mad at Roy, you love him more than anything. Which was a little sad, considering John was your son too but... well, you just never felt the same way about him as you did with Roy. You just loved being close to him and listening to him, something about his presence just made you relax and stop worrying.
You smile up at him and Roy lets out a breath he seems to have been holding, "How are you feeling Debs? How was last night?" There's a bit of an edge in his voice when he asks the second question and you remember your guilt about coming onto him in your drugged out state.
"I am so sorry Roy, like I said I was on this new medication that didn't work the way it was supposed t-"
"I mean," he interrupts, "what happened with Dr. Odd?" You frown in confusion. If you didn't know better he almost sounded jealous.
"Nothing Roy, he was very professional. He didn't take advantage of me at all, I remember!" You were insistent even though you don't remember all that much but you wanted to convince Roy that Steve was a good man. A man you kind of wanted to go out... with... "Ah!" Pain flashes behind your eyes as you envision going on a date with the handsome doctor. One of the slippery thoughts rises to the surface and seems to squeeze your brain: You don't want to go out with anyone but Roy. That didn't make any sense, Roy was your son and you would never- "AH!" the pain returned with a vengeance as the thought seemed to tighten.
Roy watched you cooly and you felt like you should be angry with him for his lack of empathy for your pain... but you just couldn't get mad. Not with Roy. He sits down at his desk and watches you for a moment with a tight lipped expression before turning away, "You're dismissed." What a weird thing to say to- "AAHH!?" You practically scream as more thoughts grapple your mind: Don't question Roy or your thoughts. You love it when Roy tells you what to do. It relaxes you when Roy makes decisions for you.
You stagger to your feet and through the open door, closing it jerkily behind you as you brace yourself agains the wall. You suddenly feel fine. Relaxed even. Some deep part of you even enjoyed doing what Roy said, even if he wasn't very nice about it. A light wiggle comes from another thought-eel: Take your medicine after checking in with Roy.
You knew it probably wasn't a good idea but you found yourself opening the pill bottle and sliding out a pill, just one this time, and popping it in your mouth. You kick yourself a bit when you realize it's barely even noon and that you'll be drugged up the rest of the day (what were you thinking?!) but at least you didn't have to go to work... crap! You'd only gotten halfway through making breakfast! As the floaty feeling started to kick in you made your way downstairs to try and turn breakfast into lunch.
