Who wants to know?
It's all fun and games until the intergalactic cops show up
Without getting up you turn to look at the door and see two figures standing there in black and silver armor, the black face shields on there helmets make it impossible to see their faces. But it appears that at least some of the people in the room know who the new arrivals are as you hear Blackfire gasp and Robin mutters, “Just great” as he face palms and shakes his head.
“Lieutenant J’hall, this isn’t what it looks like I swear.” Blackfire says the fear in her voice gives you the strength to sit up.
“Oh really,” the larger of the two figures replies, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “To me like you were associating with your former criminal acquaintances, engaged in armed robbery, and resisting arrest by dually recognized authorities of this planet.”
“No, that’s not what happened, I swear!!”, Blackfire pleads as she looks around franticly, “We were talking,” she says pointing at you, “when the H.I.V.E. attacked, and the two of us….”
“Save it Komand'r,” the lieutenant sneers, “I knew warden Kierhiee was a fool to believe you’d ever change. Trash like you never does.”
At the lieutenant’s words Blackfire’s face falls and you swear you can see the sheen of tears in her eyes. “Hey fucktard!” you snap at the lieutenant, as seeing Blackfire hurt causes your temper to flair. “Ever think of doing some actual police work like interviewing eyewitnesses before passing judgment, or has that bucket on your head cut off the oxygen to your brain.”
A collective gasp goes across the room as all eyes turn to you. The Titans are all staring at you in disbelief, Jinx snickers quietly, and Blackfire shoots you a look of gratitude as a small sad smile appears on her face.
Lt. J’hall, meanwhile, is shaking with rage as he glares at you from behind his visor, well it looks like he’s glaring you can’t actually see his eyes. “Who do you think you are human?” J’hall spits the word human like a curse, “If you don’t like how I’m treating the criminal what do you plan to do about it?”
“You wanna know who I am?” you ask as you get to your feet. Your temper blooming into a full blown rage at the lieutenant’s callous demeanor. You take a step toward forward and you feel a weight on your back as your right hand reaches over your shoulder. “You wanna see what I can do?” your voice drops into a menacing growl as something stirs at the back of your mind. You vaguely sense both of your doppelgangers start to appear watching on with anticipation and all the lights dim considerably.
Everyone in the room is taken aback by your reaction: J’hall leans back as his hand reaches for his sidearm while his partner begins to speak franticly into a communicator. Raven and Jinx stare at you with a mixture of wonder and fear. Beast Boy changes into a mouse and scurries under some debris. Starfire clasps her hands together under her chin as her eyes go wide. Blackfire drifts to the floor and stares at you in awe as her eyes begin to glow that dusky purple again. Cyborg takes a hesitant step toward you, as Robin rushes up and places a restraining hand on your shoulder.
“Lancer,” he calls out sharply before whispering something in your ear. Weariness starts to reclaim you, even as that stirring in your mind fights against it, but eventually you feel yourself overcome. As the weight on your back fades you feel your second doppelganger kick the wall in frustration before the both of them dissipate. Your body sags and Cyborg catches you as he and Robin lead you to the edge of the stage where you sit trying to clear the sudden fog in your head.
“Consider your self under arrest human” J’hall says as he reaches for his binders with hands that are trembling slightly.
“On what charge?” Cyborg demands in our defense.
“Threatening an officer of the galactic court, and aiding a fugitive” J’hall states looking around felling the room tense.
“Now wait just a minuet…” Raven begins to protest.
“Now listen here Halfling…” J’hall begins before being interrupted
“Actually I believe the young lady has a point, as did the young man you’re so eager to detain” says a rich fatherly sounding voice.
“Warden Kierhiee…” the lieutenant sputters as an elderly looking figure enters the room.
The warden makes a dismissive gesture and then turns to the room at large “Now if someone will please start at the beginning perhaps we can make some sense of this.”
Do cooler heads prevail?
