Invite them both to dinner

"Sure, your datebook's around here someplace," Gary said to Colleen. "But as long as you're here, why don't you come in and have a drink?"

The redhead said, "Love to, hun, but my cousin Jillian is with me. She's down from Canada for a visit. She finished high school last spring and she's thinking maybe she'll start college here. I'm showing her around town, then we're going to take her by the college. She's from a real small town and, well, even driving round town will be a bit of a thrill for her. I wasn't expecting her till tomorrow." Colleen was talking a mile a minute on Gary's doorstep.

"Oh," Gary said. He wondered if there was any way to salvage the evening. His girlfriend Bernie, tempted by Colleen's guilty conscience over Lil, her eagerness for sex, and her need for affection, had planned to make Colleen their willing plaything. "Come in out of the cold anyway while I go get it," he said. "It's one of those dry nights. You think it's supposed to be summer, but it doesn't feel like it."

"Okay," Colleen said tentatively. She stepped into the entry hall but waited there rather than following Gary back into the living room.

Gary turned. "You in a hurry?" he asked.

"We're on our way to dinner," Colleen said. "It's been goldfish and tomato juice all day for Jill. Twelve hours, four flights, and she's starving for some real food."

"C'mon back then," Gary said. "I didn't see it right away in the living room. Maybe you remember where you put it down."

"Okay," Colleen said. "I really can't stay though."

They stepped into the living room, Colleen stepping ahead toward where she thought her datebook was. Gary looked up and to the side and saw his girlfriend Bernie and his sister Lil looking through the second floor railing. Colleen was looking straight ahead and didn't notice.

Gary raised his voice a little so Bernie and Lil could hear. "I'm sorry you can't stick around," he said. "But I guess Jillian must be really hungry. Guess it's about dinner time for me too. Where are you going?"

"Sizzler probably," Colleen said. "There it is!" She took her datebook from behind a pile of magazines.

"The Sizzler?" Gary said. "Your cousin's come from the wilds of Canada, spending a whole day living on airplane snacks, and you take her to the Sizzler? I thought you wanted to show her the town, or at least get her some real food. You can do better than that for Jillian. I can do better than that."

Colleen looked around. "You can do better than that?" she asked.
