The Marriage Gambit
A Predicament with Only One Good Solution
Chapter 1
by ANaughtyMouse
I had been with the company for almost twenty years when Caroline first joined as a fresh-faced engineer. She was just out of college, eager to make her mark in the world of engineering and design. Over time, we found ourselves working on several projects together, our paths crossing more frequently than not due to our shared interests and complementary skills.
I took Caroline under my wing, offering guidance and advice whenever I could spare a moment from my own workload. I admired her tenacity and intelligence, seeing in her the potential for greatness that she herself seemed determined to realize. In return, Caroline respected my experience and wisdom, often seeking me out when faced with particularly challenging problems or decisions. We worked well together and enjoyed doing so, though our shared sense of humor often left colleagues scratching their heads.
We shared our work, but we also shared our personal lives. I had been married for over twenty years now; my wife was a kind-hearted woman who supported me through thick and thin. Caroline, on the other hand, was still relatively new to marriage. Caroline would come to me for advice about making a marriage successful, though usually with some sort of friendly jibe about how I had so many more years than she to gain experience of life. Our friendship felt genuine.
One day, I leaned back in my chair with a smirk playing on my lips. "You know," I began, my voice laced with mock seriousness, "I've been thinking about the concept of torsional stiffness."
Caroline raised an eyebrow at me, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Oh, really? I had no idea you were such a fan of knowing it all," she teased playfully.
I chuckled, my cheeks flushing slightly under the scrutiny. "Well, I do try my best to be pedantic and boring so that you'll stop pestering me with questions." I winked at her, my eyes twinkling with mischief.
Caroline rolled her eyes, a grin tugging at the corners of her mouth. "I wouldn't want to deprive you of the opportunity to show off your vast knowledge," she quipped, leaning back in her chair as well.
I let out another laugh, shaking my head in mock exasperation. "It's a burden, I know--especially since I'm the only one of us with anything to show off." I paused for a moment before continuing, "But since you're in such need of my vast knowledge, shall I continue to impart it?"
Caroline smirked, acknowledging the point scored. "Prattle on, good sir," she agreed enthusiastically.
As we continued our conversation, I couldn't help but marvel at the warmth and camaraderie between us. I appreciated the time I spent in Caroline's company, even as a part of me worried about how others might misperceive it. Our continual banter, our eagerness to work together - these factors could potentially be misconstrued if we weren't careful. Our age difference might not be taken as a reason to dismiss suspicions of inappropriateness, but rather as a reason to be alarmed by it.
I glanced over at her now and then, taking in the sight of her bright green eyes and smile. She was wearing a stylish maroon silk blouse that flattered her slim figure. When she bent over to adjust her chair, I caught myself stealing a look at her bust. I looked away immediately with a flush of embarrassment.
No matter how much I admired Caroline's intelligence and wit, I knew it was important to maintain boundaries in our relationship. We were both committed to our spouses, after all, and any misstep could jeopardize not only our careers but also the trust we had built with each other over the years. If a coworker accused us of an inappropriate relationship, it could be just as damaging - even if there were no truth to the charge.
I reminded myself that I needed to do the right thing - for her sake, as well as my own. Our friendship was too valuable to risk on a whim or momentary temptation. And so, despite the occasional pang of desire, I resolved to keep things strictly professional between us. After all, we had built something truly special together - and I wasn't about to throw it away. She was part of the reason I enjoyed my job.
And so it was that Caroline and I continued to work together, side by side, day after day, our friendship growing stronger over three years of working together. Our conversations remained lively and engaging, filled with laughter and banter even as we tackled complex engineering challenges together. And though our roles at the company shifted as opportunities moved us here and there, one thing remained constant: a bond between two people who had learned to navigate life's complexities together.
Is it all going to be this easy?
Two coworkers are kidnapped. Their only hope for survival is to pretend to be married to each other.
