Viking Village
Life in a Norse village
Chapter 1
by ivan-the-terrific
Viking villages were settlements inhabited by the Norse people during the Viking Age, roughly from the late 8th century to the early 11th century. These villages were scattered across Scandinavia and areas where the Vikings explored, traded, and settled.
The Vikings and their families mostly lived in small villages that were near the coast. Our story takes place in one of those villages, where the scent of saltwater mingles with the smoke of hearthfires and the cries of seabirds echo across the fjord.
Despite their reputation as brave warriors and terrifying raiders, the Vikings spent most of their time farming and fishing. The Vikings grew wheat to make bread and beer, and raised animals such as sheep, pigs and cattle. The seas were very important for Viking life and fishing provided a big part of the Viking diet.
Living near the sea had other benefits. The Vikings were excellent sailors and it was easier for them to travel by boat than by land. This was very important as the Vikings also often had to travel great distances to trade.
During the summer months, male Vikings would form raiding parties and sail across the sea to raid settlements, or monasteries to carry off all the gold and treasure they could get their hands on. They also brought back thralls from the raids.
Thralls, or slaves, were the lowest class of workers in Viking society. Thralls were usually captured during raids, born into servitude, or became slaves after incurring debt. The Vikings also bought thralls at **** markets in Europe.
The male thralls usually toiled as laborers on farms. The female thralls warmed their master's beds and bore his bastard children. Who is the main character of our story: a Nobleman (Jarl), a Freedman (Karl), or a **** (Thrall)?
Who is our main character?
