Hello, My Name Is...
Identity Control
Chapter 1
by croland
This is a place for a story, or stories, about a magic set of stickers. They appear to be a normal set of stickers you might find at any number of social or professional functions that say "Hello, My Name Is..." with a blank space underneath. What makes this set special is their ability to change the identity of the person wearing the sticker. This is how it works.
Rules of the Magic
- Anyone who doesn't know about the true nature of the sticker will ignore them until they are applied. For example if Andrew wants to change Bill into Charlie, Bill won't notice the sticker in Andrew's hand, or find anything weird about Andrew applying the sticker to him.
- Once applied the person will assume and accept the identity of whatever/whomever was written on the sticker, as if they have just been cast in that new role. Only people aware of the true nature of the sticker will notice anything different. It's as if that person has been recast.
- The sticker does not change the body of the recipient, only their own perception and the perception of the world around them.
- Following on that metaphor the person who wears the sticker plays the part of this new identity their own way. For example think about James Bond. Each actor plays the same character with the same traits and general personality, but each actor does so their own way. So if Bill becomes Charlie he will still play the part of Charlie, and believe himself to now be Charlie, but may bring his own unique perspective to the identity.
- The recipient does not automatically forget their previous existence. They will still retain all their old memories and have a vague sense of their old personality, but those will feel separate from the person they've become. They will inherit the emotions, personality and even memories of the name on their sticker. So Bill will remember being Bill, but also have access to all of Charlie's memories. For the former Bill any memory of the old Charlie will feel a bit distant. Since it happened to a different person, the new Charlie will experience all of those memories more like facts he read on wikipedia, than things he experienced himself.
- You don't have to write a name on the sticker. If you write Chef #2 on the sticker, the recipient will believe that they are chef and that will become their whole identity. They will have all the knowledge of the role assigned to them on the sticker but have no personality or motivations beyond that role. They effectively become a background character or NPC.
- If you give an existing identity to person, the previous owner of that identity becomes Nobody. They retain the information and knowledge of their old life, but lose any personality or individual drive, and no longer associate themselves with that old identity. If given a sticker of their own they will obtain a new personality and the above rules apply
- The stickers only work on human beings with fully developed brains and personalities of their own, which means they need to be around 25 years old before the sticker will apply.
Rules for Contributing
I'm open and happy to have outside contributors but some quick rules if you want to contribute
- Don't include bigotry of any kind including, but not limited to: racism, homophobia, islamaphobia, antisemitism, transphobia, ableism, etc.
- No ****
- Don't base characters on any real life human being. Even if it's just changing someone's name slightly. Using real locations or using pre-existing fictional characters is acceptable.
