Into the volcano, part 1: The three paths

An hour and fifteen minutes later, they arrived at the foot of the mountain, Lex was in front, Divi was in back, and Sazla was in the middle with the Simple bag hanging from its handle over her shoulder. It was quite light without anymore supplies in it. Divi's eyes widened as she looked at the volcano as smoke rose from the top and said. "This is a lot bigger than I had imagined, daddy. Are we really going in there?" Lex looked back with a nod and said. "Yes, our last important stop is inside. There is a blacksmith in need of rescue." He turned back and said under his breath. "I hope we're not too late."

Sazla spoke up as they continued their trek up the winding path within the mountain side of the volcano. "Is it true that volcanoes are hot inside? I, I don't handle heat well, Lex. I might need to stay outside." Lex looked back with a soft smile and said. "Volcanoes can be very hot, but that's from the lava. Luckily we shouldn't have to worry about that. However, the air will be rather dry. I don't know if that'll affect your spells." Sazla nodded before looking back to Divi and asked. "Do you think you'll be okay? You are made of liquid after all." Divi blinked while keeping pace and said. "I still have extra water inside of me, so I should be okay. We won't be in there long, right?"

Lex shrugged and said. "I can't say for sure, but I doubt it will be unbearable." Divi and Sazla nodded, but they all came to a stop upon seeing two figures in front of the volcano's entrance. Lex walked quickly behind a large rock, gesturing for the girls to follow him. They were within 30 yd of the entrance into the volcano. From this point they could see the figures were actually two lizardmen guarding the volcano's entrance. Lex poked his head out and used Observe on both of the lizardmen.

Lex focused a little harder on the two lizardmen, noticing they were both holding spears. Upon closer inspection, one had green and white scales while the other one was all brown. However, the more interesting fact was about their spears, they were almost one fourth again their wielder's height, giving them an impressive melee range. Beyond them in the shadows of the entrance, a light flickered, causing a shadow upon the wall to dance, revealing at least one more of the lizardman's shadow. He let out a breath before looking to Divi and Sazla while saying. "Hmm, so much for stealth. Divi, I want you to come with me. Sazla, I need you to stay here. When we're half way to them start creating an ice patch at the entrance before you begin your ****."

Divi nodded while Sazla replied. "Got it. Should I rush in after the ice patch is in place?" Lex thought about that a moment before nodding. "Yes, make yourself a sword out of crystal and join us. We might need to conserve mana while we're in there." Sazla nodded, chanting softly before letting out a squeak, white fragments flew through the air around her hands, crystallizing into two white long swords. Sazla smiled before saying. "I'll focus on making that ice patch."

Lex nodded before looking to Divi and said. "Let's go. We have a blacksmith to save." Sazla began to chant while they made their way toward the entrance of the volcano. The two lizardmen hissed before one of them spoke, extending his s's a bit longer than he should. "Turn back now outsiders. Or we'll be **** to run you through." At that moment, a blue mist rushed in, forming a rather large patch of ice under not only their feet, but most of the entryway too. The two lizardmen didn't have time to properly react as they tried to step back, slipping and falling back, smacking their heads hard against the ice, taking 75 damage each. 75 damage

Lex heard a few hisses come from within the entrance, several lizardmen were on their way. However, Lex and Divi weren't going to give them time to save these two. Lex cast Shadow Spike twice on one of the Lizardmen, dealing 110 damage each while Divi attacked the other with two ranged globs of her gelatin, hitting her target for 90 damage each, overkilling her target by 30 damage. 25 x 2 = - 50 Hp, 50 x 2 = - 100 Mp, (100 + 10%) x 2 = 220 damage, (60 Overkill) (60 x 4 = 240 Healing) 40 x 2 = 80 xp, Lizardman Meat x 2, 3.21 x 2 = $6.42

By this time, an alarm had sounded and several more lizardmen came rushing out. However, none of them looked down, resulting in them slipping upon the ice, hitting the back of their heads hard, dealing 90 damage to each of them. Sazla had rushed up by this time, striking all of them down by cutting off their heads with her crystal swords. 40 x 3 = 120 xp, Lizardman Scale x 6, 3.16 x 3 = $9.48 Lex cast Summon ghoul on one of the corpses, reducing its cost by 50%. 100 - 50% = 50 Mp Once risen, the ghoul looked around before picking up its spear, but was careful to avoid the ice patch while moving around.

While Lex's ghoul made its way around the ice patch, Lex used a mental command to spend his 5 new skill points in Strength, increasing it from 42 to 47. Although it wasn't a perfect move, it would help him in a pinch, especially if things would have otherwise gone south. They could hear the thundering sound of footsteps, it was obvious that far more lizardmen were on their way, but that suddenly came to a halt when the alarm stopped. Lex lifted a brow while the others looked to him. He walked around the ice patch before stepping into the entrance and said. "Stay close. We don't know what's up ahead."

Divi, Sazla, and the ghoul followed. However, the blank look upon the ghoul's face made Divi giggle. She poked the ghoul lightly before saying. "Daddy, this creature is funny. Can we keep it?" Sazla started to chuckle while Lex had a perplexed look upon his face as he thought about that before saying. "No, it's just a ghoul now. It'll stink up the house."Divi began to pout, but she didn't argue.

The main path branched off in three different directions, the left path was lit by torches, the middle path smelled of sulfur and was illuminated by shallow trenches of lava along the sides of the path, and the right path was pitch black. However, which path should he choose? The left likely had their living quarters, the middle likely lead to the volcano, a throne room, or a sacrificial area, and the right was either an abandoned path or filled with unforeseen danger.
