Chapter 13 by andycarlisle
How do you respond?
I just... I'll be okay (similar to the first option, but goes a different direction)
After a while you finally are able to trust your voice. But you can't bring yourself to look at Melody so you stare into your coffee.
"I just... I'll be okay, I just need some time. You know me, when it comes to you, I always get over it sooner or later." You realize that last part sounded extremely bitter, and bitter wasn't exactly an exaggeration.
You finally lift your eyes up at Melody and see, much to your chagrin, that her's have filled with tears once more. Her hand starts squeezing yours tightly and she begins to talk in a shakey voice.
“Y-you said that after Gia dumped you and then you drank so heavily for a week you almost got **** poisoning. You wouldn't talk to me or anybody back then. It took you months to open up to us again!”
You remember the period of time very well, it wasn't that long ago. You had been well on you way to becoming an alcoholic. Back then it was your friendship with Melody that had gotten you out of it. You're pretty sure that's not going to help this time. As your downward spiral continues, you realize Melody has set down her mug and placed her other hand on yours. You try to flash your "I-don't-want-you-to-know-I'm-hurt" grin but you can see Melody isn't having it.
“I’ll be fine.” you say.
“Please don’t lie to me Jack.”
You sigh and try to withdraw you hand, but she seems holding on to you for dear life. You look into her eyes and see your own pain and agony mirrored once again. A part of you wants to ease that pain, but another part wants to twist the knife.
"Melody..." you say as calmly as you can while you try to get your hands back.
Her eyes finally release the tears they were damming up, but she still give you your hands. You avert your gaze to your coffee again, you're feeling really uncomfortable near her.
“Melody, please let me go.”
“NO! If I let go of you now, I might lose you! I know you! You'll walk out that door, bottle up all your pain inside again, you'll go to every bar you know about, and I don't think you'll come back this time! Jack,I don’t want to lose you, I can’t lose you!”
You look at the girl sitting across from you has a determined look on her face you've never seen.
“You won’t lose me. I just need some space Melody, that’s all.” She's working the only nerve you have left.
“Please don’t go Jack. I was so scared when I didn't know where you went last night. I was so afraid you weren't going to come back. Then when you did come back, I figured you were calm enough to talk, but you came back drunk, and my heart broke... Please... Jack... Please, d-don't leave me again." her voice had gotten quieter and quieter as she talked till the last words came out as a whisper.
"GODDAMMIT Melody," You snatch your hands out of hers, knocking over your coffee, and you stand up " all you talk about is you, you, you, and how it hurts you! What about me?? You know what? I don't give a flying fuck anymore!" You go put your shoes and your hand is on the door when Melody snaps out of the shock you put her in
"WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!?" she cries
"You know me oh so well Melody, because I'm going to go to every fucking bar I can thINK OF AND DRINKING THE STATE DRY!!" Exactly the opposite of how Melody had talked at the table you started normal and ended shouting. With that you slam the door and walk down the hall, mentally cycling through your favorite bars, you decide to start with O'Houlihan's Pub.
Does Jack go try find you? Do you come to your senses and go back and beg forgiveness?
