Kate blinked and turned to look at him, as if suddenly realizing she'd uttered her private thought aloud. "Oh, uh, no that's not what I... err... I mean... Could we just pretend I never said that?"

"Sure, sure," apologized John, "I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable."

"Thanks," she returned, and then discretely moved away from him toward the other girls.

Kate kind of avoided him after that. She was probably a little embarrassed about the whole exchange and wished she could take back her confession. The trip to Hawaii proved to be a wonderful experience, but he never managed to move beyond a friendship relationship with any of the girls. During the ensuing months he often replayed the conversation in his head, trying to think what he could have said differently or better. Perhaps you should too.
