I'll get over it

You try to show her your typical fierce grin, but you have no doubt that she can tell that it is a paper thin.

“I’ll get over it, you know me, I always get over everything with time.”

You look up at Melody, only to see that her eyes have welled up with tears once more. Her hand starts squeezing yours tightly as she starts to speak in a shaky voice.

“The, the last time you said that you were drinking so heavily for a week that you almost got an **** poisoning. You would not even talk to me or your other friends back then. It took you almost two months to really open up to any of us again!”

You remember the period of time very well, it was not that long ago anyway, it was right after Gia had dumped you that you had been well on you way to becoming an alcoholic. Back then it was your friendship with Melody that had gotten you out of it. You are pretty sure that won’t help you this time around. As your mental downward spiral continues you realize after a while that Melody has by now set down her mug and placed bother her hands on yours. Once again you try to grin.

“I’ll be fine.”

“Please don’t lie to me Jack.”

You sigh and try to withdraw you hand, but she seems holding on to you for dear life. You look into her eyes and see your own pain and agony mirrored once again. A part of you wants to ease that pain, but you own anguish and sorrow don’t allow you to do what you know would be the best for the both of you.

“Melody…”

Her eyes well up with tears, yet still she refuses to let go of your hand. You avert your gaze once more, by now you are feeling really uncomfortable near her.

“Melody, please let me go.”

“NO! If I let go of you now, I might lose you forever! I know you! You will bottle up all your pain inside and go out of everybody’s way again. I don’t want to lose you, I can’t lose you!”

You look at the girl sitting across from you once more, by now her tears are flowing freely, but at the same time she has a determined look on her face you have seldom seen.

“You won’t lose me Melody, I just need some space, that’s all.”

“Please don’t go. I was so afraid of what might happen to you last night. I was so worried that I realized one thing and that makes me wish I could take everything that I said back, but I can’t. All I want is to make up for what I put you through.”

You take a deep breath and slowly you remove your hand from her grip, reluctantly she lets you go. Again you smile at Melody, only this time it is genuine, you do feel for her and you have forgiven her a little bit at least. She looks at you, wiping away her tears.

“There is one more thing I need to do, to show you that I mean it.”

You raise you eyebrows, what could she be thinking now? Before you get a chance to ask what she has in mind she quickly leans forward and presses her lips against yours.
