Beth suggested they head down to Huntington Beach Pier. There was a nice bar and grille there on main street, Hurricane's, that had a view of the ocean and the pier.
They called an Uber, so there would be no question of driving under the influence if they got drunk. They arrived at Hurricane's around 6:00. The sun was still high in the sky, but the breeze was moving in from the water, keeping everything a touch cooler.
Beth and Kyle sat inside the raucous restaurant for their meal. The place was packed with nine-to-fivers getting their weekend started. Beth had a burger, and Kyle had a seafood plate.
"I've missed good California seafood." he said around a forkful of white fish.
"Yeah I guess food must suck when you're deployed, huh?"
"Yeah, mostly."
After a couple of fruity drinks, they started to open up with a little more conversation, though the volume level made it a little difficult.
"So, Kyle, is there a girl somewhere in town awaiting your return with bated breath?"
"No such luck for me, unfortunately." He winced, and took another sip of his drink.
"Sorry. Sore subject?"
"No...it's fine." His tone suggested otherwise. "Single and ready to mingle, as they say."

}"I remember what that's like..." Beth mused.
"You sound regretful." Kyle was looking at her intently now.
"No... not really, just fondness for my days as a single woman." Beth tried not to sigh. It was time to change the subject.

}"I never really did that." Beth mused in a moment of blank honesty. "I dated one guy in high school, one guy in college, and nobody after college except Brian. I'm not sure why. Just never was that girl, and now..." she trailed off. "Sorry. Talking too much."
"No, go on." He was listening intently now.
"I don't know. I love Brian. I do. I just feel like, sometimes I missed some part of life that everybody gets to do, you know?"
"That makes sense." he didn't seem to be judging her, but she wanted to change the subject anyway. {else
