Chapter 3
by cariadferch-usa
Where do you go on your date?
Hockey
"Hockey." You directly state. Not that you actually know anything about the sport, but you're curious to see Chris's reaction. "Let's go to the hockey game."
"Hockey?" You get the surprised response you're playing for. "Really? You actually like hockey?" Chris seems quite pleased. "No, really?"
"Well, not really." You cop to the game. "I've never seen a game, but, I take it you're a fan?"
"Yeah. My dad frequently took me to arena when I was a kid, and it kind of stuck." Your date gives a polite smile. "So the concert or the gambling boat, then?"
"I wasn't teasing." You gently rap his bicep. "Well, not that much. I would like to go to the game. I've been to a few NBA and college basketball games and one football game, I would like to add hockey to the list. Besides, it's fun watching a game with fan, and I would hate to waste your friend's tickets."
"They're good seats. I appreciate that." His polite smile turns into one that is genuine, warm, and rather attractive. "We can even get supper there; hot dogs and beer, always fancy for a first date." He jokes.
"Sure," You smile. " but I guess then I'm a bit overdressed for the venue?"
"I'll miss that dress." He gives a smooth line, "But you'll be much more comfortable in something causal, and I get to lose this stupid tie."
"Deal. Give me a second." You head off to your bedroom and first shoot a quick text to your friend Teri; "So far so good, nice guy & cute. :)" and then change into a lite gray three button short-sleeve tee, an old pair of blue jeans and a wrap-around, heeled, soft-leather, ankle boots. Returning to the living room you ask about how cold a game can get. Your date recommends that you might need a light coat, so you grab your old leather bomber jacket that was your grandfather's back from his days in the Air ****. This wardrobe choice brings even more of a positive reaction from Chris than the formfitting sheath dress, as several compliments and questions come your way. At first you hope that Chris is just a history buff, and not into some strange leather thing. When you get to his car, however, his interest is explained; for the man likes dated, but stylish things.
He introduces you to "Maggie." A 1953 MG TD Roadster which he bought on ebay for $900 a few years ago and has been restoring ever since. It is a cute little red English two door sports car. The interior still needs some work, and Chris has put down a towel on the cracked leather seats. You do feel like a bit of a jerk when after he proclaims the joys of a convertible on the open road, you respond with concerns about your hair. He halfheartedly offers to put up the top, which you immediately agree to. Unfortunately, you soon realize his suggestion was more rhetorical, since it takes the poor guy about twenty minutes to get the antiquated thing in place. Though clearly frustrated, he keeps his cool, which is impressive.
Once in the roadster you apologize, "Thank you Chris, you know how silly us girl's can be about our hair," and reach over and give him a quick peck on the cheek. You action takes you as much as surprised as him, since you're not normally so forward so soon on a first date, yet it felt natural.
With a big smile he puts the car into gear.
How does the hockey game go?
