Chapter 27
by carnivorous cow
What does Druuna do now?
Hit the bastard!
Seeing her only chance of stopping the pirates beginning to dwindle away each second, Druuna picked up the long piece of broken off lumber and, with a primal cry of indignant fury, ran forward and slammed the lumber with all of her might into the back of the lead pirates skull. Everything happened so fast that it was a blur to Druuna. A sickening crack came from the point of impact, and suddenly the large pirates head was hanging off his neck in an unnatural angle. The innkeeper scooped up the pirates dropped shotgun and fired it rapidly into the four other robbers crowded around the bags of bottle caps. The four men never had a chance, and the sawed off shotgun blasted them into something that only barely resembled human bodies. Druuna dropped the wooden club to the ground and fainted.
When she came to, Druuna was wrapped in a blanket in one of the inn’s rooms. Too weak to try getting up, she waited for awhile until Walter came to check on her. When he came in he filled her in on what had happened after she had blacked out. The guards, alerted by the sound of Walter repeatedly firing the shotgun at the robbers, had come shortly after the fight. All five of the pirates were dead, and their boat had been seized by the city government to help pay for the damages to the inn. A doctor had checked Druuna out while she was **** and said that she should be fine, but cautioned that she should try only eating soft foods for a week as her throat was a little sore. Her breasts and back were also bruised a bit, but those marks would disappear in a couple of days.
Mr. Mimflin was very thankful to Druuna for stopping the robbery, though she insisted she really only distracted them enough to let Walter grab the shotgun and take them out. As thanks for her help, Walter gave Druuna six hundred bottle caps and a free room at the inn. Druuna thanked Walter and stayed in bed for the rest of the weak, healing up from her ordeal.
Finally; after eight days of resting, Druuna felt well back to normal and prepared herself to go and join the Finders Guild. She had counted it out, and found that she had seven hundred and twenty-nine bottle caps, more than enough to join the Finders Guild. After putting on her old shorts, shirt, hoses and shoes, Druuna walked through the sunny afternoon sea air and over to the Finders Guild.
Upon arriving at the guildhall, Druua once again found Junior Grandmaster Ezra Vanheim working the reception desk. He was reading an old brown book of some sort when she came in and said “Excuse me sir? I was here awhile ago, looking to join?”
The wizened old man looked up and smiled “Ah yes, the girl who looks like a courtesan, acts like a sailor and learns like an archaeologist.”
Druuna frowned “Sorry? What’s an arch-archey-ologiste?”
The old man shook his head and laughed “Don’t worry, doesn’t matter. So, do you have the entry fee now?”
Druuna beamed and handed three hundred caps to the old man “Yep! So, can I join the Finders Guild now?”
The man took the money and deposited it in a metal safe, then he grabbed a small rectangle of brown leather and said “Alright missy, I’ll need to know your name first.”
Druuna smiled and said “It’s Druuna.”
The old man nodded and said “Okay then, repeat after me: I, Druuna,”
Druuna repeated him “I, Druuna,”
“Do solemnly swear”
“Do solemnly swear” she replied
“To respect all discovers from the lost times”
“To respect all discovers from the lost times” she repeated
“and to use such discoveries to better mankind and never for my own personal greed.”
Druuna finished “and to use such discoveries to better mankind and never for my own personal greed.”
The old man smiled and went to work on her badge. He took several flat copper pieces shaped like letters and attached them to the piece of leather with a homemade glue made from horse hooves. Once the glue dried he handed it to Druuna, along with a map. “This map shows the location of ruins that are under Finders Guild control. Just show them your badge and they’ll let you in. But remember, they only guard the entrance. Once your in a ruin, your on your own. I’d suggest getting some exploring equipment before trying anything.”
Druuna thanked Ezra and skipped out into the sunshine, finally a member of the Finders Guild!
Now what shall Druuna do?
