Chapter 10

What's next?
Highway after lunch
After a brief pause, Alice's eyes flicker with determination as she speaks up. "I think it's best if we head to the highway now," she suggests, her voice tinged with urgency. "I can't go back home. My parents would put me in a convent. Plus, the sooner we hit the road, the sooner we get to San Francisco."
"Right, let's not waste any more time then," you respond, feeling your heart beat faster with excitement. "We'll figure things out as we go."
"Wait, before we start hitchhiking, let's grab something to eat," Alice says, sounding practical and logical. "We don't want to end up stranded on the side of the highway starving." She rummages through her bag and pulls out some cash. "I have some money in case we need to buy food."
"Well, I have two sandwiches in my bag that we can share," Jack offers.
Alice takes his hand and leads him back to where she left her backpack by the side of the church. They find a nearby bench to sit on and Jack takes out two sandwiches from his pack.
"Do you prefer turkey and cheddar or turkey and Swiss?" he asks politely, offering her the choice of fillings.
“Hmmm, I love turkey and swiss.”
Jack hands her the sandwich and they start eating. He shares his Coke too.
Once they finish, Alice pulls Jack close and kisses him, her tongue delving deeply into his mouth. He cups her breast and runs his thumb across her nipple.
“This is going to be amazing!” she exclaims.
They toss their trash in a garbage can.

The Summer of Love
Hitchhiking on Route 66 in 1967
The year is 1967, the Summer of Love. This is the era of Rock & Roll. The Beatles, The Stones, The Doors, and Procol Harum are the top bands. Johnson is president. The Vietnam War is in full swing. Anti-war marches alternate with civil rights protests, often led by Martin Luther King. Gas prices are 33 cents a gallon. You are eighteen years old, you live in Springfield, Illinois, the state capital, and you're a senior in Springfield High School. You watched the television coverage of the Human Be-In in San Francisco in January. When Timothy Leary said, "Turn on, tune in, and drop out," his words resonated with you, and you decided to head to California over Spring Break.
