Chapter 6
by alphakennyone
Whose story do you follow?
Heath. Yours, actually.
You are like the fourth recruit to leave the hanger. Your athletic days prepared you for this. You match the pace of the soldier escorting you, and never for a second you stop following him. Your cares for the others fade away. This is going to be about you, and you only. You are led throught a few gates in which a guard or two stands by and directs traffic in and out of the base. The sky is amber and you know it is already sunset. At last, your trek throught the base ends at a bunker.
Without a word you follow the soldier into the bunker. You pass by numerous bunks with half-asleep soldiers. Some glance at you following the soldier. They know who you are: "fresh meat."
After a long walk throught the bunker you come to a compound when there are cylindrical cells along a light-blue wall. The doors are circular. Some are open and other are being closed by an electronic hub in the center of the room. The room has a high ceiling, but you don't remember seeing a building like this on the outside. You try to get a chance to look out a porthole-like window. You see the horizon rising and falling outside. Now you question to yourself if this building is actually rising and falling giving the illusion of it being perfectly still.
The escort soldier stops and you stop a few steps behind him. He turns around and faces you. A second later a buzzer sounds and the door behind him opens. When the circular door opens and comes to a stop 90 degrees later, the escort soldier steps aside and stands parallel to the door. This is a subliminal signal for you to head inside.
The inside of the chamber is so futuristic you wonder how far forward in time this building is. The chamber is almost perfectly cylindrical. It has a bed and a pillow on top of it. Lines on the wall gives a flush illusion of what this chamber offers. Tiny motion sensors activate the many facilities for the user. Such facilities are toilet and sink, and a trash compactor.
You wonder if this is what is being used to make the soldier of tomorrow.
