Head toward the scream

You head out from the cave toward where you heard the scream. Once into the strange trees, you smell a foul odor. Before long you come into a clearing and see a large smelly bog. The edge of the bog has many dead fallen trees. You almost turn away from the bog when you hear the scream again. When you look out where the sound came from, you see the head of someone just above the surface. The scream sounds like either a woman or a child. Between you and the trapped person, you think you can see a path that isn't mud or fen.
