Chapter 3 by Suene
Who or where is Alexander with at this time?
Head of the High Science Club Terrance Stubbs! (Fantasy/Sci-fi)
Terrance Stubs, a genius of sorts and leader of the school’s Science Club. Terrance was a rather quirky individual and a recluse of sorts. He was also well known to be the absolute smartest boy at the school, without question. Showered with scholarships and offers from all sorts of colleges and universities from all kinds of different places, Terrance was overwhelmed with opportunity at his doorstep. Terrance actually was the one who founded the High Science Club at the high school Alexander went to, using his own money to help get it started with the goal of pushing himself and others like him out of the comfort zone of safe science and into the realm of impossibilities, like solving the complexities of space travel and the science of human body alterations.
The problem Terrance faced with his foundation of the Science Club was a lack of following. Nobody thought anything he wanted to achieve was possible and that it was a waste of time, money, and effort to even consider, especially on a high school’s budget. Because of this, Terrance remained the only active member of the High Science Club throughout almost the entirety of the last year he was there at school. Feeling a little discouraged about the memberships, Terrance got a brilliant idea that he ended up pitching to the school. The school agreed, and for the second semester of the last year, joining the Science Club resulted in a high credit offer for any college admission, making the deal seem much more enticing to the young, aspiring seniors of the high school. This was what drew Alexander into the club and ignited the beginning of a new era for him, one that he could only describe as fortunate or unfortunate based on how he was feeling at the time.
The one issue with getting into the Science Club? Terrance was strict about how the people were let in. He made them take IQ tests and the whole process seemed unnecessarily rigorous. Also, though no one knew it for a fact if Terrance didn’t like you as a person, your IQ score didn’t matter. He already had a list of people he knew he’d never accept, most of them the jocks and people who made fun of his ideas and what he wanted to do with the club’s direction. Alexander was able to pass with ease on the IQ test, having always been a very intelligent individual and often to himself. Terrance liked him well enough if not was at least neutral on his opinions of Alexander by that point.
There was one bug issue regarding all of this for Alexander. His bitter rival, Pho, also managed to pass and get in on Terrance’s approval. It wasn’t even that Pho was super intelligent or likable. It was because he was witty and manipulative enough to get on Terrance’s good side and weasel his way into gaining the credits he was primarily after. Alexander was after the same thing, but he despised Pho’s devious tactics and how he would use is ambiguous sexuality to flirt with Terrance without any intention of becoming his girlfriend, or boyfriend, as it would have really been. Pho was androgynous to the point it was something he could easily take advantage of, and he knew it. He not only knew it, he abused it whenever he had the chance.
Alexander warned Terrance about the possibilities of being played by Pho, hoping it would light a fire under the young man to kick him out before he even came in. Terrance’s only response though was a simple, solitary “Oh…” as he seemed to let a form of depression overtake him. Alexander knew this kind of reaction stemmed from something Terrance had experienced in the past. He acted like a young man who didn’t have a lot of luck in relationships, or at least never experienced the thrill of someone acting like they were really interested in him in that way.
Alexander didn’t want to be that person who made Terrance feel terrible over Pho’s actions. With a heavy sigh and a bundle of regret, he told Terrance that there was a way to Pho’s heart and that if he really wanted it, he would help him find it. To which, at that notion, Terrance immediately perked up. It was clear he was very invested in the idea of getting with Pho and making it something far more serious than Alexander knew Pho would be willing to do. He cringed, knowing Pho would reject him for being just a nerd.
Either way, when it came to Pho, all Alexander could muster on his lips was a simple “Damn him!” This was bound to end badly, despite what he wished for Terrance.
