Chapter 3 by Sixth Sixth

What should she do?

Head back along the crash site

Rae looked around. It was all to clear that the jungle was incredibly dense, most likely dangerous and all too intimidating. One part of the jungle was different though. The Galileo simply hadn't thumped down squarely when it crashed into the planet; it had landed at an angle, bumped and skidded through the trees before skidding to a halt.

The clearing that Rae now stood was the result of the crash as was the long, smouldering, path of destruction behind the spaceship.

"Let's go," Rae said to herself as she began to walk away from the Galileo and towards the crash trail. Although it was tempting to wait by the downed craft and wait for rescue, Rae knew the risk of the damaged ship exploding was too high. The jungle looked awful but she needed to put some distance between the crash site and herself.

Although the spiralling spacecraft had torn down many of the trees and wrought a burning path through the jungle it hadn't cleared away everything. The going was slow. The vine-like undergrowth was difficult to walk on.

She was confident that the University would raise the alarm when she failed to turn up. Her father would react quickly. Most likely he'll charter a number of rescue experts to track the shuttle and then comb the planet. She should remain above ground so scanners could detect her.

"Come on Daddy," she thought, "Rescue me."

It was then that the creature struck. It came barrelling out of the jungle at speed, hunkered down and low to the ground. It caught Rae in the side and sent her spinning.

Rae landed on the ground with a thud. At least the thick vines that crisscrossed the jungle floor helped to cushion her fall.

She could hear the jungle creature behind her. It had seemed to be brown and hairy. It was snuffling around just a few feet away.

Rae was about to push herself up when she noticed the insect. It looked dangerous. It was bright orange, had a thin head with two yellow and evil looking eyes and two huge stinging tails. She had landed beside it. The insect, which reminded her of a scorpion, had reacted in alarm and poised both stringers ready to strike... any sudden move might cause it to sting.

Rae began to panic. Behind her the snuffling jungle creature got closer. She could feel the vines move as the heavy beast stepped on them. Had it hit her on purpose or by mistake? Which was the biggest danger; the hairy beast or the insect?

What does Rae do?
