Chapter 5
What happens next?
He tries to talk with her
Steve kept wondering and decided to confront her on it as he did not think he was that bad of a guy, at least for some dinner and a movie kind of deal. He went downstairs on Monday when Rob was in the back checking on some stock items. He found Julie at the register. She was wearing a tight black t-shirt and pants that looked like they were painted on her tight ass. He was nervous as hell so he tried to focus on her face and not her body as he said, “Hey, I was wondering something.”
She was polite, but he could see she was bracing for him to ask her out again. He just jumped to his question without any further introduction, “So I was wondering if there was any way I could ask you that would get you to say yes to going out with me.”
She turned red and spun away from him. He must have embarrassed her, or even worse maybe pissed her off. Steve just waited for a moment until she said, “Look, you are a really nice guy, but we are really different people. I just don’t like to date guys that are a lot older than me.”
“Jesus, Steve said back to her. How the fuck old do you think I am?”
She said, “Umm, I don’t know maybe 35 or so?”
“Great I am only 29; man I must really look bad.”
She reached out and touched his arm, sending shockwaves through his body as she said, “Look I don’t want to make a big deal out of this. I really like my job and don’t want to lose it, but I just don’t see it between us. Is that OK?”
Steve could read the writing on the wall and said, “Yeah that’s cool. This has nothing to do with work. I won’t ask you again.” Then he walked off back to his office, a black mood enveloping his mind. He knew there was no way he would ever be able to get a sexy babe like Julie. He was doomed to jacking off to internet porn the rest of his life.
A few weeks went by and Steve did not feel his gloom lifting. He just tired to stay away from Julie as much as possible and that seemed to be fine with her. Then one Friday night he came down to find Rob agitated and pissed off as he was working on closing out the day’s receipts. “What’s wrong Rob,” Steve asked him as he came up to the counter.
“Fucking tills are $1,000 off and I can’t figure out what the fuck the problem is.”
Steve tried to help, “Is it on your side or Julie’s?”
Rob fumbled with his print outs and said, “Umm, I don’t know. Umm let me look here. Yeah it’s on Julie’s side. I must be doing something wrong. We are never off.”
Steve had a sudden feeling that something was up with this shortage. It happened a couple of times a year, and it was always when someone had screwed up a ring. “Did you check everything back against the paper?”
“Yeah, I can’t see any mistake. We just don’t have exactly one grand that we should have.”
Steve said, “I tell you what let me look at it and I will figure it out. Sometimes it just helps to have another set of eyes on it.”
Rob brightened considerable and said, “You would do that for me? Thanks man I have a tourney tonight and I have to get geared up.”
Steve quickly went through the days receipts and came up with the same answer that Rob had come up with. The till was short $1,000, there was no other explanation. Now the only question was how did it happen? Was it an accidental register mistake, or did someone intentionally take $1,000 out of the till. Did Julie do it? The thought came unbidden to his mind. Steve did not want to believe it, yet at the same time it was the only explanation that made sense.
What does he find out?
