He takes him for a ride

To Matt's surprise, Tanya was waiting in Mr. Adams' car... in the back seat. He wasn't sure if he was more surprised by her being with her father or her being in the back seat.

"You know the reason movies got their start in California, Matt?" Mr. Adams asked as he headed down PV Drive East.

"Sunshine?"

"Exactly. That and one other thing. California doesn't have the narrow-minded puritanism that a lot of the other states do. I mean, we have some. Hell, we have a lot. But not like a lot of other states. You ever live in the south, Matt?"

"I'm from Michigan."

"Yeah, not exactly the south, so you wouldn't know. Anyway, if you look at history, just about every techological innovation that took off got started for just one reason... sex. Look at video. People bought video playing machines so they would watch the porn they couldn't get on TV. Look at PCs. The Internet. Even the phone back in the day. It's always about sex because sex is what sells. I bet you don't know that I didn't get started doing A-list feature films. I got started in porn, just like a lot of producers today."

"Yes, sir."

"Still doing the suck-up? Probably good practice for the business you're in." Mr. Adams pulled into the parking lot of an abandoned department store.

Matt could only think of one reason for Mr. Adams to drag him to a completely secluded place where no one would see them and where his body wouldn't be found for a long time. Shit. The only question was, what was Tanya doing here? Had he decided that his own daughter was disposable? Or had Tanya thrown over to the dark side.

"I thought you promised me a cup of coffee." Matt tried to keep his voice level. "This place doesn't exactly look like Starbucks."

"Not yet." Mr. Adams got out of the car, then opened the door for Tanya while Matt fumbled with the door opening mechanism... and found he was locked in.
