Chapter 18 by reaper13

Does Marash buy your excuse?

He lets it go

“You know, you can also do that in … never mind.” Marash says.
You assume he was going to suggest you can also do that in the bathroom, like you originally intended. But then he would no longer have a safe place to … release his frustration. At any rate, you take place in the co-pilot’s chair again and start studying the next level.

This one is a bit harder. It is mainly about energy shields. Apparently, there are two types of deflector shields. Ray shields to block laser beams and particle shields to ward off small space debris. The problem is that ships use a combination of both and as a pilot you will need to be able to determine which gets priority. This gets further complicated by the energy the engine can provide and if one side of the shields gets too much damage you can redirect energy from a different shield and … pfff.
This level is so hard to get through you feel like pulling out your Lekku in sheer frustration.

“Need a break?” Marash suddenly interrupts.
“Yeah.” You sigh. “This one is hard.
“I know.” Marash says. “It’s why I had you study that bit with the engines yesterday. Knowing that before getting into this chapter helps a bunch. But hey, how about we take a break. It’s nearly lunchtime anyways.”
Now that Marash says it, you notice you’re starting to get hungry.

You follow Marash to the lounge where you see Captain Millus eating breakfast. Looks like he has only just woken up.
Marash takes some food for himself and then you wait. But nobody seems to make a move to give you some food. Then you realize, you’re not a **** any more. Nobody is going to feed you here. You will have to feed yourself.
At first you feel guilty at taking food yourself. But both Millus and Marash notice you taking and neither of them are upset angry at you. This puts you at least a little at ease.

While you are eating Seva suddenly comes along. Her shirt has got a fresh oil streak on it. Fresh enough that it still glistens a bit. Her green skin sparkles too. You assume she’s been sweating. She takes a plate of food and then heads off with it.
“She has a tendency of eating in the engineering bay.” Marah explains.
Well, if she has room to put her plate, that’s fine. But you wouldn’t know where in the cockpit you have any space to put a plate without it being in the way.

After you and Marash have returned to the cockpit, your teacher decides to bring the ship out of hyperspace again. This time he shows you how to enable the ray shields and also how to deactivate them. Then he tells you to do it on your side of the control panel.
After you succeed in this test, Marash shows you how to do the same for the particle shield. Then he has you repeat after him. That works too.
Now he has you activate both. The engine only provides enough energy to put both shields at 80% capacity. Then Marash shows you how to switch energy from the ray shield to the particle shield leaving the shields at 60% and 100% respectively. Your next test from him is to switch it back.
Marash gives you a few more tests with the engines until he feels satisfied. Then he has you study from the datapad again. All of a sudden, a whole bunch of it makes a lot more sense. Must be due to you having seen it in action just now.

By the time the clock suggests it’s getting about 21pm you feel you are ready. Marash brings the ship out of hyperspace again. This time, rather then tell you what to do, he gives you a situation and you need to respond to it.
“Pirate fighters are shooting at us. Adjust the shields.” Marash says.
Pirates fighters, right, those use laser weapons. You shift all power to the ray shields.
“We are escaping them through a debris field. Adjust shields.” Marash orders next.
Ok, small objects. Need particle shields for those.
“The pirates are following us. They shooting at our stern. Adjust shields.”
“Transferring aft particle shield power to ray shielding. Maximizing front particle shielding.” You say out loud.
“Very good.” Marash says. “Quite impressive. You pass.”
Though you are elated, instead of cheering you just lean back in your chair and sigh.
“Don’t worry. It’ll get easier in time.” Maras hays. “Simply practice every day and it’ll come naturally.”
“I hope so.” You say.
“Talking about practice. Wanna practice manual flying again?”
“Sure.” You say.
“Alright then.” Marash says as he pushes his chair back. “Hop on to my lap again.”
Oi! Last time you sat on his lap you … did things to him.
“Uhm, can’t I just do it from this seat here?” You ask.
“Well, yeah …” Marash says. “But if you make a mistake it is easier for me to undo when I can reach the same buttons you pushed. The way you suggest it would be more difficult for me to counteract all of that.”

Insist to do it from the co-pilot seat or agree to sit on Marash’s lap?
