Does John go inside and continue stringing Stacy along? Or does he wait for Stacy's mom to get home to confest his love to her?
He has an idea.
John thought for a few minutes. First, he started trying to think of the proper response. Then, he realized that if he spent too much time thinking, Stacy would probably figure out what he was feeling, and that would upset her. He then thought how that wasn't something he wanted. Even so, if he lied to her, the odds were good that would also upset her. Finally, he realized that he'd already spent too much time thinking silently.
So instead, he started laughing.
"What's so funny?" Stacy asked him.
"Oh," he told her. "I was just thinking about irony."
"What about irony?" Stacy wondered aloud.
"How about I run you over to my house so you can kill time with my sister and we can both be doing something we'd rather be doing than this?"
