Professor Garrison pauses and turns to look at you thoughtfully, as if making up his mind about something.

"I'll be in my office from three to four this afternoon," he says. "If you're seriously interested in improving your position in this course, you can come and talk to me. But let me be clear, Miss Carter. There is no easy way to succeed."

You nod slowly, biting your lip to stop it from trembling.

"Very well," he says, turning to leave. "I shall expect you at three. Or not, as you decide."
