Chapter 13 by cphi cphi

What's next?

Having a normal one.

When Beth reached the boat, climbed aboard and dried off to use the head, she couldn't avoid noticing the irregular swaying of the craft, not exactly in line with the undulating waves. As she got closer to the door to the bedroom cabin, the sounds of sex became unmistakeably clear.
"Jake...fuck me harder, baby..." Lindsay's voice.
Beth rolled her eyes and used the toilet, trying not to listen to Lindsay's moans. She was a vocal one: many a night in college Beth had been kept awake by her roommate, even when she claimed she had tried to be quiet. Resisting the urge to poke her head in and say something snarky to ruin their fun, Beth grabbed a beer from the cooler and headed back onto the rear deck in time to see Tim swimming towards the boat.
"Hey!" he called to her. "Throw me one, would you?" Beth obliged him, and they spent a while talking and drinking together. Apparently, Lindsay and Jake weren't the only ones getting busy: Kendra and Dean apparently liked sex on the beach, and Tim didn't mean the drink, either.
Beth explained the situation going on in the cabin, and Tim chuckled. "Figures. Kind of thought Jake had a thing going there."
"I guess everyone's hooking up except us." Beth mused idly.
"Too bad you're not single." Tim laughed, and Beth gasped, jaw dropping.
"What?!" she was flabbergasted.
"I'm sorry!" Tim was turning red. "My mouth always gets me in trouble. I didn't mean..." he was tripping over his words, and just looked down.
"No, it's okay." Beth wasn't offended. Surprised...and maybe a little pleased? but not offended. "You're pretty cute... it is a shame." That produced such an enjoyable look of consternation on his face that she had to laugh out loud. "I'm teasing you, just relax."
They talked a bit longer after that. Tim was actually a very nice guy. He claimed that his biggest flaw was having no filter, but she didn't really see that problem manifest. I don't mind compliments. It turned out that his mouth was the reason, according to him, that he was single, and had never been able to hold down a long term relationship.
"I always manage to open my mouth and say the precisely worst thing. Eventually, most girls just get fed up with it." He shrugged.
"I don't mind a guy who speaks his mind. Sometimes, it takes a crowbar to find out what Brian's thinking." Why are you measuring Tim against your fiancee?
"Well, I'm glad you think so, but most girls... my last steady girlfriend threw a glass of wine in my face."
"Oh, shit!" Beth hadn't meant to laugh so loud. "I'm sorry. That sucks."
"Naw the joke's on her. She tried to storm out of the restaurant, but she'd had a few, and she immediately face-planted on the floor in front of everybody. She...she was a hot mess, if I'm being honest."
"Emphasis on hot, right?"
"...eh...." Tim shrugged. "Only until I realized how big the mess was."
"What about you? Where's your fiancee? There was plenty of room, I would have been happy to meet him."
"Ugh...He works for a marketing and advertising firm, and he's trying to make partner before he's 30, so he works a lot and then has to do a lot of extra shit. He's schmoozing a potential client at a charity event tonight."
"Oh, I'm sorry. If he makes partner, though, you guys will be living very comfortably, I imagine."
"Yeah..." she tried not to sound wistful.
