Chapter 10

What's next?

Hank brings Lacy back to his wife

The car ride felt a lot longer than it had before. This time, Hank drove in perfect silence. His smile was gone. He'd replaced it with a scowl that read more as frustration than anger, but it wasn't Hank that Lacy was worried about. She wasn't afraid of what Hank could pull out of himself to make her feel bad, though those words had done a number on her. The trouble was that they weren't driving to Lacy's apartment, but right back the way they'd come to begin with. They were headed back to the studio, and to Janice.

Lacy momentarily thought about jumping out of the car and running for it when they stopped, but that was silly. She wasn't in mortal danger. All that was going to happen was that she would have to answer for what she'd done. Oh, and get blackballed, maybe. Janice obviously wouldn't be shooting Lacy again for her magazine. There were other photographers who wouldn't care what a Christian women's magazine editor thought, but Lacy would still have to weather the storm of that anger. Oh, and there might be some very public humuliation too. Janice did not keep quiet about her enemies.

They pulled into the driveway of the studio and Hank opened his door in a huff. "Get out," he growled, and stepped out himself. He was on his way inside by the time Lacy had gotten out of her seatbelt. There was still time for her to run for it. But she really did feel guilty, so she followed him inside. The studio was dark. Janice had a sort of waiting area and Lacy sat in one of the chairs there. Hank had already disappeared into his wife's editing room, and she could hear them talking, though not the words. It didn't sound happy.
